New user and a few questions

Hi, I am new to DCG. Just a few questions that I couldn't find answers for:

1. I am currently at 4.11.1+HSFX 6.017. I really like the AI in HSFX. Just wonder if DCG will change the AI behavior in any way.

2. P51-25na and 30na are available in stock 4.11 and HSFX. However, they are not avaiable in DCG campaigns. Any way to include those 2 in DCG campaign plane upgrades?

3. Would DCG change any plane's FM?

No it just generates dynamic missions for SP,Coop or Dogfight.

You need to add new planes yourself to DCG, by editing certain files, which are in the Data folder that comes along with DCG.

3. Would DCG change any plane's FM?

No. DCG is no mod, but a dynamic campaign generator.

You will find some more and already altered files in the forums or in the web with added mod or stock planes.

Google for HSFX class.dcg e.g. . Just in case you want to add more than the Pony to DCG.

Hi Nephris. Thanks a lot for the tips. I tried your method. It didn't work. The planes show up in DCG aircraft settings panel fine and you can change all the parameters. You can also see it in the dropdown menu in game. However, when I fired up the DCG campaign in game and click on "generate", the game just drops into the background and I end up with Windows desktop in my face. It seems HSFX planes are made only for online and quick missions, not for offline campaigns. Sigh.

Actually, it worked. Haha. I forgot to change the date when the plane is first available. Awesome, thanx again. One more minor question. I am currently play full offline auto campaign (with original Dgen replaced by DCG). It says in the DCG instructions that I can play stock campaigns. I would if I play stock campaign, I would get the same dynamic features (like dynamic front) as in DCG?

The stock campaigns are the default campaigns that come along with DCG, if you replace DGen.

You can also load 3rd party campaigns, which are downloadable at Lo´s Website e.g.

Either you play the grandcampaign after you replaced Dgen or you simply generate a single campaign via the world button in DCG gui.

However it keeps working on active and moving fronts as long as you marked "active fronts" under options in DCG.

You will find a the so called master files in the master folder that comes along with DCG.

This are the templates, where you could edit the amount of vehicles and planes in a campaign, as stock DCG campaigns were written for weaker systems some years ago.

Here u can add several new squadrons to each side. Dont forget to give each new squad u add a virtual squadron tag like 160IAP in the FMB of Il2 itself.

I am always confused about what is stock and what is not. Let's take an example.

1. I pick USAAF

2. The drop-down menu on the right has 4 options

a.bomber pilot

b.fighter pilot

c.DCG pacific

d.DCG western front

I suppose the first 2 are stock campaigns and the later 2 are brought in by DCG? The first 2 are still playable under DCG environment and DCG settings are also affecting these 2, right? I like a grand campaign, where I can go from start of the war to the end, gaining plane upgrades along the way.

Hi Paul,

I just tried Stock campaign under DCG environment. Overrall it works fine except some really weird issues:

Background: I started as USAAF fighter pilot in Hawaii campaign then after that the game auto transferred me to New Guinea campaign, which is fine. However...

1. After transfer, my kills from my Hawaii battles are gone and sortie number reset to 0

2. There are a few missions where my flight spawned right on top of friendlies and exploded right off the bat

3. The friendlies are just doing nothing except flying waypoints then land even though I was in the thick of combat and called for help.

1. Strange, your kills and sorties should have carried over. I will see if I can replicate it on my end.

2. Did you spawn in the air or on the ground? And if on the ground, were the friendlies static aircraft or AI?

3. That friendlies don't respond to your calls is a game glitch. Once they get into landing mode, for example, nothing will wake them out of it.

I spawned on the ground. I am not so sure whether they are static or AI. I happens so fast. But I can tell you one thing. My entire squadron exploded, also along with several other P-400 (my squadron flies p-40B). I believe the issue is we spawned on top of AI. I also believe it only happens to that big airbase located in port morsby. When I first transferred to New Guinea, I was in a small base to the east. Then I got transferred to Port Morsby after Japanese landed in the east. The first mission out of that new base in Port Morsby, I exploded.

Also on a different topic. I tried DCG pacific campaign (the one not stock). Occasionally, I got "not a valid integer" error and the game crashes. Very frustrating. Do you know what causes it? I never saw that error in stock campaign though.

Oh, also, I was able to get most new planes in HSFX into DCG by changing class.dcg files etc. Would it be possible to do the same thing for Dgen? Does Dgen have similar files like class.dcg and loadout files?

I'll run some missions from the large airbase at Port Morsby and see if I can replicate the error, thanks.

I can't guarantee DCG will work 100% with HSFX. The "integer" error crashes are often a result of DCG trying to read the log file generated by the game and HSFX modifies it. If it crashes in future, you could either email me the eventlog.lst file or post it here. The error might also occur because you made an error entering the new planes into the class.dcg and/or other files....

Can't help you with the DGen question. You might want to ask over at SimHQ or another forum.

Thanks, Paul. In addition, I realized a new problem. I just did a fresh install and modified class.dcg those 3 files. When I entered 3D world, the game crashed and all I saw was a big pink engine cowling and no cockpit. Someone told me it was cause by failed java and need fix log.sl file. However, I went on SAS website and download a DBW mod. With the mod, it worked. The planes showed up and playable, but then I once again had "integer" error and explodes at start problems. Is fixing log file something easy to do?

It's a case of fixing the code in DCG that parses the log file. (That or you delete the lines in the log file that are crashing DCG after each mission and before DCG processes the mission).

But I can't fix the code without seeing some log files responsible for crashing DCG as I don't have HSFX installed (nor plan to install it).

I did a little testing, but I'm stumped. DCG's New Guinea campaign doesn't use any of the big airbases near Port Morsby. It uses just Schwimmer and Kila and both are single strips.

I see. So it doesn't sound like such a huge issue that we need go into the core of the program to fix anything. I'll try to grab the log file and send it over to you. What is your email?

That's very strange because I remember seeing a big runway made of concrete. Anyway, let's deal one issue at a time. I believe the explosion at start may have cause by DBW Mod I grabbed from SAS website. Next time, I'll just change class.dcg those 3 files to see what happens.

Hi, explosions at mission start are usually caused by DCG trying to load a non-existent weapon configuration (bombs, etc). This, in turn, is caused either by a typo in the DCG weapons file, or a MOD using modified weapon names. Try to load your abortive DCG mission file in the FMB and check whether all equipment is loaded correctly. Then save it under a new file name and compare it with your abortive mission file, looking for weapon references.

My personal experience is that DCG works well with the stock game (4.11.1 so far for DCG). If you want to use it with mods, look for DCG campaigns created especially for that mod. 'Mod-ifying' Paul's DCG files (created for and tested on the stock game) is a very hard work, maybe someone else has already done it.

That is a common error to modfied files you changed for DCG.

You missed some brackets or spaces in a file or probably your added plane got no skin assigned to the plane.

What ever causes the crashes, it is due an error in your modified files.

Maybe you want to follow my tip from the very first post and get the altered files for HSFX

I guess some of the weird issues were caused by many mods and utility software I installed for Il2 such as stab etc. I just did a fresh fresh install. Patched up to 4.11.1 and then HSFX 6.017. Then put in DCG. Everything works perfectly. After that, instead of putting in whole bunch of planes at once, I just insert one a time. I started with pony 30. Just change those 3 files. Surprisingly, everything works charm this time. The new plane spawned correctly. No pink cowlings, no invalid integers and when mission starts in-flight, the engine is running instead of a dead engine. So I know for sure that with basic HSFX and DCG, p51-30 works. Next step, I'll add other planes to see if anything would go wrong. Also, I found out my stats got reset cuz I had the option "Stats reset upon death" checked. I initially thought as long as you refly without quitting the campaing, I am not counted as dead. A couple of other quick questions though:

1. I was flying DCG pacific campaign. There were a few missions where the AI CAP flights were placed too far north-east. The Japanese strikes that came from south west were totally ignored by them. They did nothing when the carrier fleet was wreaked by the Japanese bombers. Is there any way I can adjust the waypoints of these flights to put them in the correct area? Btw, these are AI flights

2. Is there a way to turn off chute for Japanese pilots? I thought there is an option to do that. Don't mean to be cruel to Japanese pilots, just want to have as historically accurate as possible.

CAP is a bit difficult to calculate when the object being CAP'd is moving. It would sure be nice if 4.11.1 has finally created a patrol command that would actually have CAPs follow an object...it would certainly make things easier. The only way (for you) to fix it would be to modify the mission in the FMB before starting the mission.

Chutes can be off for all AI pilots, but not for any specific nationality. Sorry.

  • 2 weeks later...

Another quick observation. I flew one mission in USN pacific DCG campaign. At the beginning of a CAP mission, I shot down a bomber, but I was so close and rammed the debris. I quited the mission while my plane was crashing. However, when I reflew the same mission, the kill from that discarded attempt still got counted. So basically, I can refly the same mission and get millions of kills. I have the following options selected:

1. No instant success: on

2. Reset on death: off

3. Track plane losses: on

4. Primary objective: off

Any of these should changed?

The problem of having "reset on death" on is that death zeroes out everything even if you don't hit apply rather refly the same mission. I guess one of my wishes for the future DCG is that mission results and pilot kills should only be recorded if the player hits apply. If you choose refly, basically you are giving up the last mission result and having another attempt at the mission. One more question. The guide is a bit confusing on "No instant success" and "primary objective" combo.

1. "No instant success" and "primary objectives" both off: you can move on as long as your pilot survive and not captured

2. "No instant success" off, but "primary objectives" on: you can only move on after you complete your mission objective

3. "No instant success" on, but "primiary objectives" off: you can move on as long as your pilot survives and not captured and there is no "mission complete" message?

4. "No instant success" and "primary objectives" both on: you have to complete your mission to move on and you don't get "mission complete" message?

Is my understanding correct?

Assuming you are using the "1946" version of IL-2, you should always select "Instant Success". It doesn't matter so much in DCG if you select "Primary Objectives" or not. DCG doesn't care if you complete the mission or not, time marches on regardless. The selecting of "Primary Objectives" will put some additional code in the mission file which will trigger a message if you succeed or not (and which can or can't be used by online campaigns for additional information), but for offline play, it really makes no difference.
