Mauler Mithel
Hello Fellas! Hope you are all well, I started painting my planes for JG1. If you guys could stop by RoF forums and give your two cents that would be great! I won't be doing anything too crazy. Just a few emblems here and there. Also any feed back or tips would also be greatly appreciated! Prost!
Klaiber
Very nice skins, Kempf! Thumbs up from me. Here's the links for everyone wanting to check it out: Pfalz D.III: http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46416-fictional-pfalz-diiia-skin-jg1-kempf/ Fokker E.III: http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46415-fictional-fokker-eiii-skin-jg1-kempf/?do=findComment&comment=643018
Vonrd
Nice skins Kempf! Keep it up... it's addicting. I've included a link to .pdf files of a few of my skins including the alpha files. Not that I'm the best skinner around, but it may prove interesting. I think we all have different methods of weathering, etc. The alpha is a good way to get that bare metal under paint chips look. BTW - if others would be willing to post their pdf (or Gimp) files, I think it would be interesting to compare methods. Mauler Mithel
Thanks Vonrd! I'll definitely try your "chipping" style. I like putting the hours into these skins. Still learning the tolerance with the black background. I was painting the Albatross D.Va and noticed that one of the Jasta 43 planes had been painted with large green stripes. I opened it in Photoshop and it looked like they just applied an overlay even on the black. I then ran and tried that and sure enough the mipmaps were ruined and the skin was broken. So the Albatross D.Va is definitely going to take a little longer. I am working on putting an edelweiss on the fuselage and it keeps getting clipped. So I'll continue to rework it until I get it right. Also could you guys give me your best educated guess on the color of the band? I'm guessing it's either red or blue, however looking at the other Albatross D.Va and D.III of Kempf's it might be black. Actually this brings me to another topic, are any of you guys good at judging the colors of these black and white photos? In Rise of Flight, the Albatross D.III for Fritz Kempf for example is black with the white stripe. Which what I imaged, however I have now been seeing a few photos suggesting red. I remember reading long ago that reds and blues can be mistaken fro black, and that black tends to look lighter in these old photos. You guys have any thoughts on this? Klaiber
You may want to check out the forums over at The Aerodrome: http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/ There are some very knowledgeable people there, who may have already done a lot of this research. Generally, I believe Jastas recorded the basic descriptions of their pilot's aircraft. This was to aid in identification, both in the air and if the aircraft was shot down. Some of these records survive. And these often help researchers identify colors. But, the marking descriptions are often very bare, and they leave a lot to the imagination. It looks like the band on the Alb could be black, as it seems to react to the light in the same way as the Cross Pattee on the fuselage. I'll do some research and see if I can find out more information for you.

Mauler Mithel
One more time! I just posted the Fokker D.VIIF, if this thread is becoming too long or I need to post else where please let me know. Sorry for spamming my links here. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46495-fictional-fokker-dviif-skin-jg1-kempf/ If there are any issues please inform me! I think the last planes I will complete will be the Fokker D.VIII and SE5a. These will take sometime to complete as I am trying to think up something simple, but not too bland. Maybe the Nieuport 17 if I can think up something. The other aircraft, Alb and Halb D.II I like in their factory skins. As well as I will be using the Kempf Alb D.III and Dr.1 skins already made. Mauler Mithel
S! All, I put a lot of paints up yesterday. Some are for Kartoffel, one for Archer, and a few for myself. Let me know what you guys think. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46778-fictional-n17b-skin-jg1-kempf/ http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46777-fictional-n17b-skin-jg1-kartoffel/ http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46776-fictional-fokker-eiii-skin-jg1-kartoffel/ http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46780-fictional-n11-skin-jg1-kempf/ http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46775-fictional-n11-skin-jg1-kartoffel/ Archer was talking about an all black D7f like this. I never heard back from him so I'm posting it anyways. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46774-fictional-fokker-dviif-skin-jg1-archer/ Kartoffel mentioned an all black plane the other day. So two birds with one stone! http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46773-fictional-fokker-dviif-skin-jg1-kartoffel/ I was going with the old DOS red baron paint scheme here. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46770-fictional-n17-skin-jg1-kartoffel/ Is the dragon emblem to shiny? Let me know asap so I can fix it. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46771-fictional-albatross-dva-skin-jg1-kartoffel/ Removed the band around the edelweiss. Kept the extra black trim as well. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/46772-fictional-albatross-dva-skin-jg1-kempf-version-2/ All feedback welcome, I did do all those in one night. So if you guys see an error I missed please let me know. I already had to fix number trim on the pair of N17B.

I already had to fix number trim on the pair of N17B.Both of these look brand new with the exception of the Maltese Crosses which have some chipped paint... I think this is on the template. If you're going for a factory fresh look, I would clean up the crosses. If not, they could use some over-all weathering.Regardless, a very impressive portfolio of skins... lots of work... well done. Voted yes on all.Salute!

I remember reading long ago that reds and blues can be mistaken fro black, and that black tends to look lighter in these old photos. You guys have any thoughts on this? Different films have different color sensitivities. Orthochromatic films (which were used first around the 1870's) rendered red as black, since they were not sensitive to that end of the spectrum. Panchromatic films, introduced ca. 1906, eventually took over about 1920, and have a more realistic color spectrum. So it would be important to know the kind of film used or the exposure date to determine the likely original color. That being said, some colors might be ruled out, for example: colors such as pink and yellow are never dark. Therefore, if the B&W shows certain areas as very dark, then you can probably presume these areas were not pink or yellow. But for a given tone on the B&W, there are many possible paint colors. So although you can rule out certain colors, you can never nail anything down.
Mauler Mithel
Good eye Vonrd, I never noticed those scratched up crosses. You think I would have when I was painting around the rudder one. I fixed it up and think they look a lot smoother now. I hear you about the paints. I just get a little annoyed not knowing if that is Paul Baumer's Albatross or if Kempf actually flew it. I would like to do historical paints, but most skin have no real facts to claim to them.
