Vonrd
Yeah, I know the story... but to hear it from the pilot's mouth (who has a refreshingly high, altogether not the Hollywood Basso Profundo, voice) is totally priceless. BTW, I currently work on an old Citation that is flown by a former Habu pilot... he's more like your armchair uncle than a "hair on fire" movie pilot. Thanks Maus! Ludwig
I had an f/o that was a backseater on the blackbird and his stories were really amazing. The distance, the speed, the radius of a turn at 2,000 kts are all crazy stuff so far out of the realm of the rest of aviation and then look back at when the machine was designed and built. What have you done for me lately?
Maushake
Yeah, I know the story... but to hear it from the pilot's mouth (who has a refreshingly high, altogether not the Hollywood Basso Profundo, voice) is totally priceless. Well, as he says in the story, it's those Navy show-offs who cultivate the slick Hollywood voice, not the quiet unassuming types of the USAF. FourSpeed
If you have an hour to spare, Brian's talk (~1:10) at Lawrence Livermore is pretty good. It also includes that story (it's from his ('92?) book "Sled Driver") but he has a lot of other interesting experiences and viewpoints he shares. He spent a year in a military hospital, recovering from an AT28 shootdown in 'Nam, before his "sled" days, for instance. He's quite an entertaining and good speaker, plus he brought some great SR-71 pics to show as well. Here's a link --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wigZsFypdyI Regards, 4 <S!> PS> That "speed" story is one of my all-time favorite aviation anecdotes -- love it!
