Video editing help?

Recommended Posts

For capturing footage, I use FRAPS or NVIDIA’s in-game video capture (used to be called ShadowPlay...not sure what it’s called now). For creating simple ROF videos, I use Windows Movie Maker. It’s great if you want to do something quick and/or don’t want to get bogged down in lots of options.

For videos where I want a lot more control over editing, I’ll use PowerDirector 15 or Hitfilm 3 Pro. Hitfilm is a bit on the pricey side, so I’d recommend PowerDirector is you’re looking into getting a good editing program. ;) Both these programs give you a lot of editing options, plus the ability to layer multiple video and audio tracks over one another. However, the learning curve is steeper than Movie Maker. IMHO, it’s worth it, as the extra control I get in video editing is so useful for what I do. However, if you’re just looking to create a quick tutorial, all that might not be necessary for your purpose.

Hope this helps a bit!

I use Shadowplay to record; if you want external views of engagements, you can use the in-game record, then use Shadowplay to record the playback while you manipulate it to see all the views you want to see. You won't have voice from TS that way, but you can dub in narrative onto it later with the editor. I use "Videopad" editor, which seems pretty user friendly and and has good help features. It has a "free" version which you could use to see what it's like, but it won't let you save any of your work until you buy it for around $50.

These other guys have far more experience, and I don't really have anything to compare to; but as a beginner, I was able to figure it out.

One thing to remember about YouTube is that it uses your Google account name and won't let you change it unless you change your Google account name. Best to create a whole another separate Google account to use for YouTube only using your gaming name or whatever.

PS- Shadowplay is part of the "nVidia Experience", which is linked to your nVidia drivers. If you don't have an Nvidia GPU, you'll have to use Fraps or something like that to record mp4

Does anyone have a lead on a free Photoshop type picture editor? just need to simply add lines/draw neatly on a screenshot.

You can do that pretty easily with Paint, and you already have it. "Neatly" is subject to interpretation, but Paint has tools that you can draw and adjust circles, ovals, arcs, shapes, etc.  You can add text boxes of any size, font and color.  Stuff like that; and you can paste screenshots very easily into Paint.  You can select and crop or cut out sections very easily too, and resize if needed.  If you have a specific question just let us know....there's bound to be somebody that knows more than I do, but I do alright.

You can get Photoshop CS2 here:

http://www.redmondpie.com/download-adobe-photoshop-cs2-for-free-legally-while-you-still-can/

However, it doesn't work very well with Win10.

And, this link for CS2 is designed to be used as replacement software for people who had previously purchased CS2, but can't get it to load properly.  Thus, use at your own discretion.

GIMP or paint is probably a better way to go.

Win Movie Maker wouldn't open though it's showing in my folder in Win 10. I figured I'd just download a fresh version from MS but...

"Windows Movie Maker is no longer available for download"

  • Windows Movie Maker, part of Windows Essentials 2012, is no longer available for download. Websites that offer free downloads of Movie Maker are not offering the real thing, and those downloads may contain malware, viruses, or hidden costs.
  • Instead, try making movies with the Photos app that comes with Windows 10. The latest version of the Photos app includes the ability to create and edit videos with music, text, motion, filters, and 3D effects.

I tried the Photos App... what a POS!

Yay Microsoft!   :(

I'm using CS2 without any guilt... Adobe quit selling stand-alone Photoshop and now only sells subscription based. I don't want to lock in to a monthly payment if I'm not using it regularly. I go in spurts... currently I'm using it quite a bit but previously, after ROF didn't load skins for years I didn't use it much at all. I wouldn't object to buying a one time DLC but I'm not going to sign up for a subscription. If they still allow it for download they basically say it's OK to use.

It's working well for what I'm doing.

I use OBS ( https://obsproject.com/ ) recording since I already have it up for Twitch and plan to use Nvidia's Shadowplay for non-Twitch movies if I can figure out the recording options.  I use the very powerful and free version of Lightworks https://www.lwks.com/ ) for editing.

Lightworks looks like free trial only unless I'm missing something.

I had Sony Vegas 12 for a while that I had gotten for free (don’t ask me how * cough cough*) but when I changed my SSDs it didn’t transfer. I did just pick up a version of Vegas 14 for some $50 but haven’t quite had the chance to use it yet, but I will soon. I’ll let you know how it is. I had purchased a version of Pinnacle and that software was garbage (a waste of over $100).

Good work Ricky. Did you talk while filming, or film and then add the audio later? Are you planning on using the "aged" effect for your whole series?

I put the clip in there, added all the effects, then recorded the audio over as i watched the video play. Probably won't do the aged effect for the whole thing. Kinda was just playing around getting a feel for the program.

A couple of suggestions.

Try to explain the mechanics of what you're doing, as it relates to the game.  Experts like you do things in a way that's superior to the way regular people do.  Exactly how are you slewing your view around?  Do you use TIR at all?  If so, is it on?  If it's on, is it paused?  Are you using view keys to move your view?  Are any of the views saved views?  Your slewing speed looks quick and accurate.  How's that done....game slider settings, mouse speed settings, or a combination of both?  If that's the case, what are the settings?  What brand and model of mouse do you use?

As you can see, even a short video like yours can raise a LOT of questions.  You're the expert....tell people how YOU do it.  Many will reject what you say or not bother to change the ways that they do things because they're used to doing things the way that they do them now; but that's their problem.  Your role is to show them how an expert does things.  Don't sell yourself short!   :D
