Thank you everyone for a great event! It was my first time commanding and was a bit overwhelming at times, especially trying to listen to both J30 on Teamspeak and everyone else on Discord, but we managed and I thought everyone worked well together.
Got out to a bit of a slow start at first as I was having trouble locating enough bomber pilots. I put J5_Daedallus in command of 8 pilots for the interceptors/defense. The rest of us finally were able to get up into 3 Gotha's with J30 and NobiWan as escorts. Unfortunately in my haste I neglected to deslect a bomb load and have my power up in the airstart spawn, so I started to lose control of the aircraft. I dropped my bombs and recovered but lost 1,000 meters altitude. I managed to catch up some and regain some of my altitude but never got to be in close formation as intended. It actually worked out ok as it split some of the attackers. Kaiser got wounded and Maus had some damage, but we were able to trip the target goal and we all were able to make it back. I've attached the Tacview I was able to record on this one. I am also attaching my ops plans for the missions we ended up doing.
After all of us were able to land successfully and get our point, we switched to the DFW's with the intention of hitting the Arty North target. We met up with our escort and hit our initial waypoint ok, but after crossing the mud we ran into heavy flak. Maus got a direct hit and was destroyed, so knowing there was no way we were going to be able to finish the mission with only two bombers in the time left we head south to get their balloon cluster. We ran into some serious resistance but were able to knock down three balloons and score our second point. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to overcome Entente's 4 point win but everyone did well, had fun and I especially learned a lot.
Thank you all again and hope we can do it again soon!

    Vogel's back!
As some of you know, I've had a pretty bad time in the last year because of an eye condition and various personal bits and bobs. After surgery and all that faff I now also have my specialist contact lenses and I can finally see stuff properly again. In the sight test I pretty much have my old 20/20 vision back most days give or take a bit if I'm tired or whatever.
I also have a new HOTAS Warthog (hopefully) arriving today to replace the one that unceremoniously bricked itself. I'll be rusty as heck, but I'm looking forward to flying again with everyone. Availability might be a bit spotty some nights beause of my shift work and studies but I'll do my best to work around flight nights.
    Cheers!

Always loved those games, and still play them!  Haven't tried the modern one yet, but the WWII ones are brilliant evocations of small unit actions, creeping through the Normandy hedgerows, fighting house to house in Arnhem, trying to move your tanks along the narrow, muddy roads in the Ardennes ...

Trivia:    CLOSE COMBAT was one of the first Microsoft games that REQUIRED WINDOWS to be played. I *REALLY* wanted this one because it was akin to Avalon Hill "Squad Leader" for those of you over the age of 50. So they have made several games from supporting companies, independent companies (ATOMIC Games comes to mind?) but after about 4 or 5 of them it went dormant for a lot of years. Then when everything became DLC they popped up again with some new games on the same format.
SO... STEAM has the whole kit and kaboodle on sale. It was $259.00 for a long time and I thought about getting it, but I had a couple of the games already and that soured the idea. SO today out of boredom killing time before work I checked again to see what I might get singly and there it was 85% off... and I got all the games I was missing for the price of one.
This is a most excellent system and is easy to learn, GUI is intuitive and the part that separates it from the rest... is one....  it is not turn based... this is on the fly commanding. Two, it is morale based so if you don't have leaders, or expect these guys to fight to the death they will give you the #$% and leave.  Does an EXCELLENT job of frustrating the #$% out of you and uses real LOS and does a reasonable job on the side of the AI.    Snaggle and I played this back in the early 90s and enjoyed it a great deal.
So if you like infantry armor squad level tactics this is a really good deal.
I got the four games I did NOT have for $45.00
(PS I had to install WINDOWS on my 486 Dx33 to play the original and give up DOS...  a decision I still question.)

    JG1 is proud to present:
    Air Combat Multiplayer Events (ACME)!

ACME is a series of homegrown one-shot competitions that use the IL-2: Flying Circus, IL-2: Great Battles, and DCS World Open Beta simulators.
Some ACME events have the most basic rules, concentrating on fun-fly matches for the open community.
Other ACME events are flown as serious online contests using “dead-is-dead.” In those matches, each player only has one pilot per night.
Details regarding ACME events are always posted well before the event date, with clear instructions on what registered pilots and guests should expect.
Our first ACME offering is “Aces Over the Rhine,” created by JG1_Kliegmann!
Aces Over the Rhine is a fun event for IL-2: Great Battles, using the Rhineland map and a 1942 plane set.
Players will have an unlimited number of virtual lives, but aircraft are limited!

Great photos!  One of my former academic colleagues was a specialist on Thera and its connections to the Atlantis myth (or supposed connections; she didn't really buy the hypothesis that it was the origin of the story) and wrote a couple of well-received books on the subject.

    Kameraden,
Was lucky enough to spend better part of a day exploring a stunning dig.
    This site:
Akrotiri (Greek: Ακρωτήρι, pronounced Greek: [akroˈtiri]) was a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini (Thera).
The settlement was destroyed in the Theran eruption sometime in the 16th century BC and buried in volcanic ash, which preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks. The settlement has been suggested as a possible inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis. Akrotiri has been excavated since 1967.
    History
The earliest evidence for human habitation of Akrotiri can be traced back as early as the fifth millennium BC, when it was a small fishing and farming village. By the end of the third millennium, this community developed and expanded significantly. One factor for Akrotiri's growth may be the trade relations it established with other cultures in the Aegean, as evidenced in fragments of foreign pottery at the site. Akrotiri's strategic position on the primary sailing route between Cyprus and Minoan Crete also made it an important point for the copper trade, thus allowing it to become an important centre for processing copper, as proven by the discovery of moulds and crucibles there. Akrotiri's prosperity continued for about another 500 years; paved streets, an extensive drainage system, the production of high quality pottery and further craft specialization all point to the level of sophistication achieved by the settlement.
This all came to an end, however, in the 16th century BC with the volcanic eruption of Thera. There is a variety of dating evidence for the eruption, but its exact year is not known. Radiocarbon dating places it most probably between 1620 and 1530 BC, which is also in accord with the date range of 1570 to 1500 BC suggested by similarities of the material culture with other sites in the Aegean. Unusual growth patterns observed in tree rings in 1597, 1560, 1546 and 1544 BC are consistent with a major volcanic event in any of those years. The latter three dates might be the best candidates as they are also considered possible for Egyptian New Kingdom records that are thought to refer to the eruption.
This is a model of what has been excavated so far, they guess they've unearthed less than 10% of the site.
