Firefly
Genossen, I've decided to start this thread to share some of the Cold War aircraft videos from my YouTube favourites. Hope you'll find them both educational and entertaining. Enjoy! S! Firefly. First up - glorious cockpit cam video taken from a Marinefliegergeschwader 28 (MFG-28) "Paul Wieczorek" Su-22. Includes some formation flying, sea skimming over the Baltic and target practice. This was taken mere months before the LSK/LV was disbanded, its assets taken over by the Luftwaffe. Compilation video of various MiG-21 variants in East German service. Includes footage of F-13 and PF variants (the latter was called PFM in East German service, which is why the actual PFM was designated SPS by the LSK). Moving on - MiG-21 operations in mid-1990s Poland, Gdynia-Babie Doły airbase. Hungarian MiG-21F-13s in the mid-70s. Love the clean lines of this machine. Czechoslovakian MiG-15 instructional video. Solid quality for such an old tape. Czech (not Czechoslovakian) MiG-21MFs on operations. Features a glorious soundtrack by Nena. And now for something entirely different - Drakens, Drakens everywhere! F 10's J 35s in the mid-1990s. More to follow in the coming days. IRFC Hawkeye, Butzzell, Britchot and 3 others
Firefly
When I said days, I meant minutes... Czechoslovakian film on road base operations, 1980. MiG-23s and 29s in Czechoslovakian service. Another road base video, though this time filmed from a private VHS camcorder. Polish MiG-23MFs of the 28th Fighter Aviation Regiment, early 1990s. Here's one for the rotorheads - Czechoslovakian Mi-24D instructional video, exceptional quality. The final flight of an old warrior - Polish MiG-21 flight from Zegrze Pomorskie to Krzesiny, right before the type was taken out of service. \ How to fly a MiG-29 in an air show, demonstrated by Poland's Adrian Rojek. I was there to watch it live, it was an absolutely spectacular display. Lipfert, Butzzell, wheelsup_cavu and 5 others 7
Britchot
Fantastic, collection, @Firefly! I now have a huge list of clips to watch. I hope you don’t mind, I’m going to move this to the Video sub-section, here in the public chat. With all the references to the aircraft we fly, I think it might avoid being buried there. Also, for those that may not have noticed, we can now post more than two embedded YT videos!
Klaiber
Great collection, Firefly! Can’t wait to watch them. Erhardt

I wasn't sure where to put it... 10 minutes ago, Klaiber said: Great collection, Firefly! Can’t wait to watch them. Glad you find them interesting. Wish I could share my book collection too, alas, copyright laws... Erhardt
Britchot
I have a wonderful, limited edition WWII autobiography that I wish I could, share, as well.

Klaiber
I love the MiG-15 instructional video from 1960. What an amazing find. Also, all the road base footage is really impressive. We should give stuff like that a shot on the Caucuses map, and see how we do. Erhardt

Wish there we had a similar official channel in Poland, but with current political climate that'd be impossible... As for road base operations, I'd love to try that! Is there a strech of motorway anywhere on Caucasus that we could use for such an exercise? Erhardt
IRFC Hawkeye
Don't know about the Caucasus but it is a myth here in the US that 1 in 5 miles of the US Interstate Highway system is straight in order to facilitate emergency landings. Apparently this is not true, according the Dept. of Transportation. Still, whether planned or not, there must be a ton of places that you could find to land, if needed. I watched the MIG-15 video (so far), which was really cool. If only I could have understood what they were saying.

Firefly
More stuff! Greek F-4E Phantom operations. Finnish MiG-21bis cockpit tour. The differences between this export model and the aircraft we have in DCS are quite apparent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=us01NdMGVtY [embedding doesn't work on this one, sorry] An excellent walkaround of a Polish MiG-23MF, freshly restored by Grupa Archeo Łask to static display condition. And now for something entirely different - USAF testing of No Kum Sok's MiG-15. Polish Su-22s departing Kleine Brogel AB. Glorious video and sound quality. Russian AF Su-24 and MiG-31 operations. Again, lovely quality. Polish Mi-24s at a local airshow at Nowy Targ. The Hind is a genuinely scary machine, even in this hideous overall green camo. Czech MiG-23ML at the 1997 edition of the Royal International Air Tattoo. This aircraft was seldom seen in the West, even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, making this footage doubly interesting. [again, no embedding, sorry.] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z57oMS-tydk Czech MiG-23 and MiG-23 instructional video. Features ground checks, refuelling, servicing and in-flight videos. Wonderful! 4k footage of Bulgarian MiG-21s during an air-to-air photo shoot. I love the paint scheme on these. Russian Su-25s in action, includes a live fire segment on a shooting range. Last but not least, I found another glorious MFG-28 video, depicting a Staffel of Su-22s over the Baltic Sea. Well worth a watch. I watched the MIG-15 video (so far), which was really cool. If only I could have understood what they were saying. It probably was true when it was built but I can tell you there's no way in hell our interstate roads could support the weight of a modern jet aircraft. However, if you're in a civil aircraft in an emergency it can come in handy. Especially if you're handy with your plane.https://www.ijpr.org/post/pilot-lands-plane-moving-truck-s-flatbed#stream/0 Kinda funny that it happened on Highway 97 as I've traveled that road more times than I care to count in the last 20 years
IRFC Hawkeye
Travel on I-75 in Kentucky and Tennessee and you'll quickly see that straight road one in five miles is not even close to being true, although there are many good stretches in all of the states. Just not nearly that many and in some states a lot less than others.
Firefly
Hungarian MiG-21bis operations from a grassy airstrip, 1992. I don't think I've ever seen another such video! wheelsup_cavu, Jonne, Razwald and 1 other

Britchot
Here are my favorite Su-25 videos: The second one is called "The Rooks Arrived" by Nikolay Anisimov, and the lyrics are translated: Urgent mission now, as always. Looks like our guys got caught. We are flying days and nights At own peril and own risk. Marking place in my map-holder In that square like in a birdcage Our recon gasps for air Trapped in damned mountains Got objectives on the briefing - Need some luck to start completing We’re pushed for time or else Whole platoon is gonna die. Engine start - no time for runup The technician in old suit Slaps my aircraft’s wing edge And two “rooks” are taking off! We can not admire the landscape - We should be on guard while flying Making turns between the mountains Come on, bro, don’t be so slow. We're flying round the hill and Taking look while in a pullup. Whoa! What a gangbang’s there! Care, wingman and stay tight! Hey, down there, hold on dogfaces Time for us to take an action! - ”Gatlings, 30 to your left!” - Shouts the “ground” in headphones Making turn and laying HE-s And while breaking over target Craft is suffering heavy bumpings Like I’m driving country road Traces round me like the web strings I’m maneuvering on toes What a story do we have here - Like the Rooks by Savrasov We arrived for the rescue Getting very warm reception But the “ground” is keeping silence, Come on, recon, speak to me! Somersaulting and rolling Upteenth time I'm telling: I’ll retire after this one, Don’t want coffin in my home. Why on hell to military? When in civil - different story I would have a car, a mansion And be piloting a "bus". My poor “rook” got heavy damage I will bite them back for this one And i see in my direction Flying purple-colored balls Though the miracles still happen - I’m alive, but being hit hard Smart in eyes from perspiration And no refuge from the heat. Getting hot - it’s not just warming Sending “presents” to the ground Very hard to fly the flag Under such a hail of lead Air gun is like a tank’s one - Bark and bumpings from it firing Like I'm mouse in a tin can Being pummeled by rock drill!!! Let’s not get into the reports For them not to drink for our souls’ Squirming like snake on the panful All my ammo have been used. Simulating air attacks Time to get out of this battle Fuel tanks are close to empty And plane’s cracked all it’s ribs. Shivers ran down my spine: "Rook" is nodding like he’s tired So, my life is open question - Craft is absolutely wrecked. But it's still alive and breathing Like there's someone up there helping And i hear in the headphones: “Hey, flyers… Thank you, guys!” On back bearing, decrabbed Left behind all shells and bullets Law invented by Bernoulli Keeps my “rook” in the air Craft holds on on wing and prayer And the blood from nose is running Looks like i’ll get in med.unit A good healing grue from doc. Outer, inner5 and the landing Drag chute smacked behind, deploying After taxiing i’ll step backwards And don’t touch me for some time. Somewhere’s fight, but far from here And around is such a summer… Tech will give me cig and fire Cheer up, guys, life's going on! Some flying over Norway (104s) And then the most awesome thing ever made by man...the F-16 Figthing Falcon...
Firefly
A Czech excursion to RAF Fairford for RIAT 1991. Love the air-to-air shots of MiGs in formation with RAF Phantoms. Erhardt, Klaiber and wheelsup_cavu
Klaiber
Here's my addition: An interview with Lt Colonel Jyrki Laukkanen, a retired Finish Air Force pilot, who flew the MiG-21bis. Lt. Colonel Laukkanen is also an author of a number of books, the most readily available in English being Finnish Air Force 100 Years.
