Pretty normal first results.  With the MiG-21, you have to fly it to the ground, not allowing yourself to get too slow trying to flare.

No kidding. Very tricky aircraft, i can see that. Looking forward to getting to grips with it though.

Do you own any helicopters? We fly those too. Many of us are eagerly awaiting the Mi-24.

I'm so Sorry Firefly i didnt see this question! No no Choppers yet but i concidered the Shark at one stage. I was so engrosed with the A10 though that i never came about. I bought the MiG-21 today and had a start up and quick circuit. Crashed it on landing of course!

Sounds like a workable plan. As Brit said, a few of our EU pilots have the Viggen (not me though, I could join you in another airframe), so the evaluation shouldn't be too much of a problem. The MiG-21 has rather limited air to ground capability, but until we get a Cold War-era Soviet ground pounder (think Su-17 and MiG-27) it's one of the best assets we have. We've done both A-A and A-G in tournaments before (we even sank an imperialist CV once! :P), so we're no strangers to mud moving.

As for A-A training, we'd be happy to give you some guidance. As long as you know basic flight manoeuvres and can navigate your way around the cockpit (which is a loose collection of switches and buttons scattered around the cockpit) you should have no problems dogfighting in a MiG. Just remember that the 21 is a difficult machine to master, as it's actively trying to kill you at every opportunity. It's like training your own Russian attack bear - it may not always work as intended (and you may get eaten along the way), but when it all comes together it's great fun. In Soviet Russia aircraft fly you! :P

    Thanks Brit and Firefly,

Dont talk to me about Su-17s - pretty much my dream plane! I think there is a player made mod coming though so maybe? Who knows! Yeah i'm up for a challenge, mate, no problems. I've flown the A10c so if i can work that crazy system out i hope i can with the MiG-21!

    Looking forwards to it

  4. Hi Firefly,

    Thanks for your reply.

I am well up for that. I have been looking for a cold war flight crew for a while. I'm about to pull the triggar on the Mig-21 but wanted to see if i could join first before doing so. In terms of the Mig-15/19 and L39; the autumn sale might actually be a great time to snap them up. I am primarily (as you can see from my other airframes) a ground pounder so i have a lot to learn with interception and dog fighting though i have some experience with the eastern european style of cockpit with the Viggen.

    Thanks for your reply, mate.

    • Is there anything else that you'd like us to know?
Is it only teamspeak or do you run discord as well?
I'd like to start flying the Mig-21 but i'm totally green so are there training exercises?

Cheers, hope to hear from you soon.
