Vonrd
I can't say that I'm totally convinced but I like the attitude of saying, "We know it's going to fail but we want to see just how it fails". It's all important data. They KNOW it's going to fail but their test vehicles are not so exorbitantly expensive that they can't absorb that failure, learn from it and progress to the next stage. EDIT: The fact that there are no human lives involved is a significant factor. It seems that there are always individuals willing to put their lives on the line to further knowledge of the currently unknown... Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield, two who survived and/but, unfortunately Geoffrey de Havilland, Mel Apt and numerous others who did not. Without that risk to life, more risky testing is an option. This attitude can be applied to multiple endeavors. wheelsup_cavu and Klaiber 1
