    Several problems here.

     

    Vonrd suggested that the new combined edition with the plane mouse controls is one of the problems. I think he is on to something. When you pick joystick in the set up, it negates mouse control of the plane. That probably affects the gunner.

     

    Not sure why track IR freezes. 

     

    Switch position bug is even deeper. If you do switch, it does not even put you in the proper location. That means that someone probably overwrote all the locations for all the planes when they combined weapons mods and field mods in the last patch.

     

    There are 2 server files that 777 constantly change with EVERY update. One is the Dedicated config Dogfight and the other is the Startup config.

     

    The dogfight file is where you set mission parameters. That will be things like padlock, aiming help, and idle kick timeout. Obviously some things were overlooked but in general it was ok last night.  The things you really worry about is turning on far icons on the map so that you can see enemy 100 km away.

     

    The startup config file has a section on client and server traffic limit. 777 keeps setting this too low on almost every update. It needs to be checked after every update to see what they may have done. We found that the traffic limit was indeed set to low. This was the cause of all the warping.

    News is interesting or rather the news in the announcement. It looks like they are combining weapons mods and field mods. If you bought one, you now have the other for that plane.

     

    They are passing out some freebie personal mods packs and St.Mihiel campaign is now free.

      a lopsided event where one group defends and the other attacks.  Np .  Got it set up on the Russian map.  Russians attack with S-22 bomber, Fe2b and DH2 as fighter.  At this point Germans whoops, Austrians have Fokker E3.

     

    Now, counting planes is a real no no. Since only 2 high level targets , only 2 S-22 allowed.  That leaves 8 other missions. How about only 4 Fe2b. You have to save some if you are going to bomb all targets or do all missions. Is 4 too few?

    One full sector is 10 km.

     

    The barge or ship that is a secondary objective does not move it will be at a dock on a river. The trucks or tanks do not move. They are on lunch break. They will be next to some low buildings. 

     

    It is hard enough finding these thing to begin with. Letting them move would be too difficult.  The other problem is that the location sector, 10.3 is not very accurate. They are close. That is why each target will also have a name.  So for tanks and trucks you go to an area and then look for a village or town. For the ship you look for a dock in a river.

    The target types are for understanding the location and score.  There was a need to describe secondary targets or objectives. What has come about is this list:

     

    Artillery spot results in a front line unit objective. This is usually within  10 km of the front. Not too close, we want some time to go into enemy territory and make it a little dangerous.

     

    Espionage mission results in a reserve unit objective. Reserve units are in the rear 10 km of the map.

     

    Reconnaissance mission results in a reconnaissance secondary objective. These units are spread out and can be almost anywhere.

     

    Reconnaissance of enemy front lines should result in a front line objective but that job is taken by the Artillery spot. Since the team doing this mission is not doing Espionage, this mission results in a Reserve unit mission.

     

     

    When these objectives are activated there is a subtitle that will say:

     

    what type of objective :Reserve, front line, Reconnaissance secondary.

     

    what type of unit : Vehicle (trucks), tanks or ship.  The vehicle and tanks will always be a group of 3 with an AAA truck to make 4. You must kill all 4. The ship will be a river barge at a dock. This type of objective does not move. On some maps there will be a hidden target similar to the train, which is a moving ship somewhere on the map. It that type of target is going to be used it is announced before the tournament begins and will be in the objectives list. A moving ship will be a hidden target. There will be a repeating subtitle that says "Ship not found". That will be separate from "Reserve unit ship at Ville de Engu , sector 22.4

     

    Where the unit is located: This will be a named location ( Ville de Engu) and a map coordinate such as sector 22.4

     

    The whole subtitle is ""Reserve unit ship at Ville de Engu , sector 22.4"

  6. Klaiber had some suggestions to work on.

     

    Blinding the enemy:  Give balloons a little bit better cover up high and deadly down low like the front. If you kill all the enemy balloons you have limited their intel along the front. Counts as a mission.

     

    Reprisal for dastardly action: Make a target such as a train, ship factory or aerodrome give a secondary mission  to the enemy! Basically subtitle would be something much smaller than "The Red Cross reports bomber action by Entente forces on The Pomacle aerodrome resulted in the nearby village being damaged as well. Of special mention was the complete destruction of the local orphanage. Over 20 sisters of the order of St. Lucius were killed or wounded along with over 73 orphans. Entente forces in the area should expect Reprisal action from the German forces." Something similar for the Central side." Those Bastards!!! They killed Kenny!!!" Lets bomb their Drome!!!"

     

    Target selection for what would be a war crime is random along with what the reprisal target would be. Reprisal target would probably be a level bomber target of some type preferable a military target. Bombing an enemy civilian target would not be acceptable. 2 wrongs don't make a right.

     

     

    These ideas are interesting and very easy to do. They would add 2 more missions to future FiF events.

    You may have to hit the refresh button.  The Russian map has mountains. DUH!!!  Well golly gee.   

     

     

    The problem for level bombers is that the elevation of the target must be subtracted from the plane altitude when put into the bomb drop mechanism.

     

    I went back and added the elevation for many, not all targets.  There are enough to give you a general idea of the local elevation for nearby targets.  The map above displays the updates.  The elevation numbers are easier to read in game where you can zoom in.

    I ran into trouble switching the sides and the targets. The mission has some glitches. Part of that is also some plane changes during the mission. I did that to give people to see what it is like in different planes.

     

    The ILYA Muromets Is a wonderful bomber platform. It is also slower than sh*t. Not very well armed with defensive weapons. Hope they get some mods soon.

     

    Navigation is very difficult as many of the rivers and forest look similar.  The trick is to find one you can usually recognize at altitude and use it as a reference.

     

    Labroisse suggested more balloons along the front lines for better deliniation.  I will give it a try.

    We have a new area.  It is an area that involves what would become southern Poland and the Ukrane.

     

    The map is called Tarnopol in the mission editor. This is a city in the northern part of the map. The Carpathian mountains are west and south. It looks like a much more interesting place. The problem is the amount of forest cover limits target positioning. There are no trench lines to make a visual cue for where home is. There are plenty of rivers.

     

    I have made a preliminary map for FiF. It is smaller than we normally use. It is 35 km X 35 km. The purpose of this is to let people fly on a new area and become familiar with it. While the Blue Areas of Influence are shown as straight line fronts, I placed the balloons and artillery positions in a Zig Zag pattern. This is to show the lack of a trench line and that the lines were not so straight and solid. There is no low level AAA along the front at this time.

     

    The mission will be running on the JG1 server for peole to check out. If you destroy a target within the first 20 minutes, you will not get an immediate target destroyed message. It will be counted and pop up on the updated mission objectives list.

     

    Targets are:

    1 hidden recon 

    1 Aerodrome attack-  Must bomb the oil drums. They are the real target.

    1 bridge

    1 ship sailing on a river

    1 factory

    1 Front line recon - Entente only

    1 Spy mission  - Central powers only 

    1 Arty spot

    1 Arty spot secondary - Kill front line troops, either a group of tanks or a stationary ship at a location.

    1 Recon secondary - Either a group of tanks or a group of trucks.

    1 Spy or Enemy lines recon secondary - Kill Reserve Unit, either a group of tanks or a static ship at a location.

     10 missions for each side

    There are no trains or road convoys.

     

    The names of locations are in Russian with Polish translation underneath. I have made some new locations. I made up names that may look Polish. I have very little familiarity with the language, mostly food, peoples  names, some cities and some curse words.

    Apologies if any of the phony names offend anyone. Please let me know and I will correct them.

    The recon target is the AAA gun.  If we swapped it out for the Balloon, I am not sure it would work if it was destroyed before the recon was there.

     

    The problem with the game in general is the number of "Linked Entities" available. The recommendation is to not use more than 80.

     

    We are using about 280 linked entities. It works because we have about 55 or less active at any one time. This leaves room to turn on AAA at targets or over the front when needed.  Things like trucks or ships can be turned on or off.  When a secondary target is enabled the target objects are activated at that time.  Most secondary targets have been either trucks or tanks. Lately some of these have been swapped out for static ships at a dock. Only one entity instead of 4. The problem is with buildings. Buildings can not be turned on or off. This is shown with factories, We have 4 factories on each side. That makes 8 entities alive for the whole session. Now do not get tricky here. Yes, they are all alive but only the designated target will bring success. When the target is killed it taps a counter. That counter activates the destroyed subtitle and tells the target total board of the success.  You can kill the other factories but their counters have been disabled and will not register success.

     

    Many of the pilots liked the level bombing target we did in FiF XVIII which was the England map. I have been working on trying to place a second level bomber target. The problem has been to stay away from buildings. The Aerodrome attack looked good in FiF XIX. It was a spread out group of small planes and was therefore a low altitude target. I tried changing it to big bombers for FiF XX.  It looked good but we were having several new problems. I think it was too much AI because of the bombers. Changed the target back to 3 small planes. Worked better. Small planes were hard to see from over 2k altitude but it still worked. Going to a Balloon diminishes the AI load and the number of entities. Yes it is fairly easy to kill with a level bomber. Down low, it is a another story. There are 6 AAA guns down low.  I have not tried it with bombs down low, as most of the balloons are about 80 meters above the ground. If you can kill it with guns in a single pass you have about a 90% chance of being buried on the spot.  Very dangerous indeed.

     

    I think the Balloon is an easy target for a level bomber. I am not that good at level bombing but have had success every time. Being a fighter pilot, I see the goal of the aerodrome attack is to drag enemy over my territory where I can shoot down this big fat goose.  ;)

     

    If we did go with buildings, we would need to use an identical target for both sides. Aerodromes  actually use a lot of AI. Maybe the big factory oil drums? Fuel depot raid? Buildings can have their hit points altered so that it would take more bombs than the small planes can carry.  

     

    The main problem with any air sim is that it ends up being a bomber game. We have done ok with having a recon, trench map. arty spot, and a spy mission. Adding a second high level bomber mission adds some variety for the bomber pilots. What would be very nice is a new 2 seater mission that did not involve bombs.

    Another thing to consider, if the aerodrome is combined with the recon target ( option 3 ), it changes the allocation of pilots. You have to wait till you find it to task a bomber crew.

     

    Option 1 gives you a target at the start. You can put people in the air.   

     

    Operations officer decision. The target is known. Attack now and spread out your forces or leave it for later and keep more people on other targets.

    In Wen discussion, someone mentioned having an additional hidden target.  I mentioned at that time that I was trying to come up with a different level bomber target to replace the planes on the aerodrome attack mission. I believe Klaiber brought up the work being done on Zeppelin bases by the 3D modelers.  Well, it is now time to try and put this all together.

     

     

    I believe that the Aerodrome attack mission can be modified by replacing the planes with a balloon on the ground. A balloon is not a Zeppelin but we have to work with what we have. This gives us a larger target that is easier to see. To prevent low level attack a couple more AAA trucks are added. This would be 6 low level and only 2 for high level.

     

    This brings up several options:

     

    1. Leave Aerodrome attack as a designated target as we have been doing.

     

    2. Since the Balloon is easy to see, make aerodrome attack a hidden target that must be found.

     

    3. Combine the balloon with the current hidden recon target. The balloon will make it easier to find the active recon target.  Bombers can then be called in to kill the balloon.  Recons would still trigger an additional target when they land. 

     

     

    Comments:

     

    Options 1 and 2 create more targets that are spread out on the map and thus spread out flights.

     

    Option 3 combines mission locations but creates more room to change locations from session to session.

    Something else to think about. 

     

    We live in a world where we not only have become dependent on an intact dependable internet but a dependable internet is expected.

     

    When we had problems last moth it was immediately assumed it was the mission. Why? Because we have had multiple problems with missions in the past!

     

    Unfortunately we may have to accept that between Provider manipulation, hackers domestic and foreign and plain old bad weather, there will be a disturbance in the Force. We just need to accept it and move on.

    The fix of deleting old files is OK to do. It is not 100%.

     

    We still see the problem.

     

    This is a multi player, multi server, multi game problem.

     

    I am not positive but I feel this is a combination of ISP chocking service and constant DOS attacks.

     

    Not sure how to proceed.

    Due to internet connection problems causing people to be disconnected, session 3 was scrubbed.

     

    This looked to be a universal problem as the same experience was present on the New Wings server as well.

     

    We will resume next Wen Nov 19, 2014.
