Question for the Silent Hunter players

I'm curious to pick up one of the versions of Silent Hunter; which one is the best in your opinion? I've heard that there was some decline in quality but without any additional guidance, I'll probably just buy the latest one. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks.

Silent Hunter 3 is very very good. Almost a classic. Especially with the realistic JSGME mods that people have made. The only downside to it was that they never implemented any Wolf Pack tactics for multiple subs. You're always on your own. This is a huge oversight if you ask me. But it may have been fixed through modding. I'm not sure.

Silent Hunter 4 was just okay, in my opinion.

I never bought Silent Hunter 5 due to bad reviews. Not sure if the modding has fixed it.

I have both SH3 and SH5.

SH5 is beutiful, but broken. From what I've heard the mods only create more problems than they solve, so I havn't messed around with modding it.

SH3 is obviously a little less graphically pleasing but the stock game works better.

If I were to recommend one I'd have to go with SH3. Although, you will need to invest a bit of time hunting down and installing mods to make the game playable in the long-term.

There is a Wolf-Pack mod I found a long time ago but I never got it to work (pretty much gave up on the game).

My favorite part is that I can play it with one arm ;) Whenever I'm alone with the kid, I'll be taking the helm, I think. I'm just starting to figure out the whole torpedo calculations. I'm not one to start easy and work up to difficult, I'm all in from the start.

This guy's "Let's Play" series is instructive and very entertaining. I've learned quite a lot watching him in the late hours on the rocking chair.

Regarding torpedo calculations, I discovered that SH3 gave me a great opportunity to dust off my slide rule (I went to a school where electronic calculators were verboten, but slide rules, log tables, abaci, etc. were allowed because you have to think while you use them). If you're able to get hold of one, it's great for calculating, for example, target speed if you know that when you're on a collision course (target at constant bearing, closing range),

own speed target speed

----------- = -------------

sin AOB sin bearing

so you just line up AOB on one scale (S) over own speed on another (D), move the cursor over to the target bearing on the S scale, and read off the target speed on D (for a calculation such as this, using the S scale for the angles means you're actually working with the sin of those numbers, no need to calculate them). It's also helpful for working out range, simply moving the slide to keep track of and project range data, and often quicker than using a calculator for this kind of thing ... unless you've got a calculator that you can simply set up with various programmes so that you just enter the numbers, but then that wouldn't be as immersive, would it? ;)

Haven't played in quite a while, but this thread is prompting me to fire up the game again ...

S!

I've still got this game installed, but I haven't played it in a WHILE. All this talk makes me remember midnight port raids and evading destroyer escorts. The utter terror resting on the sea floor trying to blend in with the clutter while patrol ships circle like vultures, the ominous screech of the sonar ping that might betray your position.

It's becoming harder NOT to play...
