This looks like the original Red Baron ... I think the game you're thinking of was a different one.  I can't remember what it was called, but I do remember playing it, and you could send or receive challenges in the course of your career.  I seem to recall a graphic of a glove being thrown down when you were challenged by an enemy ace!

Looks like Red Baron to me....the pitch and font of the text and the color of the box is pretty well etched in my brain. Also, it would previously say something about shooting down a plane, and I remembered that when it included the name of the person I was really impressed... MAN...  *that* was technology.
