JG I "Richthofen" - FIFXXIIIa Session 2A (20 January 2016)
Barton replied to Klaiber's topic in Squadron News
congrats guys! -
The most hair raising one yet. Don't think I've ever dodged or taken so many bullets and gotten away...ever. Enjoy!
-
It can be done! Landing a Pfalz D3 with no upper wings...

That's impressive! -

Get well soon Shnoze! Salute! Barton -
I was practically standing on the left rudder pedal and had the stick almost all the way over to keep her level after the right wing got chewed up. I was plannin on bellying it in until my pilot started to cook

Recorded with shadowplay. Ripped off my left aileron in a high speed dive earlier in the mission. I Uninstalled BOS. =(

This time in a Spitfire. Enjoy! S!

Maybe it's that I'm tired, but I only got like 5.

The bullet spread out beyong 100 meters is atrocious, so I rarely shoot from beyond that distance unless I'm trying to hit a Spad or SE5 that's outrunning me. I like the culminator sights (esp night version) better than the telescopes but generally speaking I fire from the hip and have a general awareness of where my bullets are going through experience. The best way to improve gunnery is to decrease the distance you are shooting from. Less dispersal, less lead, and each round hits harder. It's a tactic that works regardless of what era you're flying.

With Vonrd and Labroisse flown tonight.

Salute! Spent 8 years in the Navy making sure laser guided warheads landed on the right foreheads. Loved watching the videos of stuff gettin blowed up on CAS missions over Afghanistan. Made many a grunts day seeing f/a-18s make mince meat of enemy positions (though not quite as cool as when the warthogs did it, but is anything?). Special Salute to the boots on the ground. I did my job to make sure they were safe as we could get them.

Yes they are powered by exhaust gasses but the plumbing required for cooling wouldn't necessarily be long. It was in the P47 because they put the turbo just forward of the tailwheel. Even so, the advantages still stand. It may be best the Luftwaffe didn't because one could only imagine how the war would have changed with 190s having unimpeded high altitude performance.
-
I often wonder about why these were not more extensively used in the war. They had been around for a long time and began to see use as early as 1925. I know the P-38 and 47 utilized them and the P-47 was a monster at high altitude. Imagine if they'd stuck one on a 190! Superchargers are almost as complex and lose efficiency at higher altitudes requiring multiple stages and the 200m difference between one stage and another has huge implications. Absolutely none of that with a turbo. Maybe it's just because I'm a turbo guy when it comes to cars, but in a plane you don't have to shift so there's no turbo lag (and even if you are switching back and on the throttle it wouldn't be much anyhow with a v12 or 18 cylinder radial pushing it) I'll acknowledge that I haven't really looked but I don't know of any documents that would explain why one was preferred over the other.

I might have to throw my hat in the ring here

I used to play the hell out of that game. Had my favorite experience as a sniper on a custom map in this game. Went from 5 kills and 5 deaths to 5 kills and 7 deaths to 53 kills and 8 deaths. It was carnage. Haven't played it in years

Hey c4nucK! I used 200, though I'm experimenting with 150. I've been using 150 for the E1 and it seems to work pretty well.

I started to get really nervous when I started trying to get him into a roll and I couldn't keep him out of phase. He was more aggressive than most. Usually Spit pilots will roll more lazily with you hoping to preserve their speed and you can spoil their shot but he was giving it everything he had to stay with me and push for the shot no matter what I did. I could have made it back to base if I hadn't turned around to help the other 109 but then I wouldn't have gotten my revenge! I wish I had taken a track of the flights so I could review how exactly each of the two Spitfires that attacked me reacted to my evasive maneuvers. I think that would have made a great training video.

Recorded live and presented as it happened with comms (finally got fraps to record TS). Enjoy! ~S~

There are times when I feel like this, but it's usually followed by me getting spanked by a Spitfire

Congrats to Hotlead for a good streak! I was one away from ACE, too, DAMMIT! Oh, well. I had some serious fun with those twin guns in Fred's F.E. -
Pfalz D.IIIa Pilot Looking to Fly With Group
Barton replied to BlackFalcon's topic in JG1 Recruitment
Sounds like you and I could have some good conversations BlackFalcon. I've been studying the WW2 air war for as long as I can remember and have to a limited degree studied the WW1 air war as well. I haven't read Hoggan but I might try to dig him up on amazon now.
