  1. Why wouldn't the Army operate CAS aircraft? The Marines operate Harriers for that reason, let the Army have the A-10s. Of course you'd have to splice that out of the Air Force's budget and they'd scream about that. There's absolutely no good reason to replace a cheap and effective weapon with anything but a cheaper and more effective one, which the F-35 is neither. It all goes back to politics because that's all it ever is, so to avoid that subject as Klaiber wishes I'll drop it. The troops on the ground should and are enjoying it while it lasts. The plane will be as legendary for it's generation of warplanes as the P-51. Personally, unless the Air Force comes out with UAVs or UFOs it's the only plane I'd want to call in to help in a firefight. It may just be the best design for it's job as is achievable. Everything about it was crafted to the experience gained in over 20 years of CAS from WW2 to Vietnam (hell it's named after the Thunderbolt) It would be interesting to put out another contract for the A-10s job and see just how similar to it those planes are. And, if it's possible to improve on it, shouldn't we? But, then again, how could you? LOL, give it, short stubby wings, a single engine, low thrust to weight ratio, low payload, and stealth (oooh, internal bays)? Even if the F-35 becomes everything they promised it could (would) be it still wouldn't be terribly difficult to beat. I'd keep the A-10 forever.
  2. So, Scrap the current A-10s and reproduce them. Do the same with the F-16. Both planes are cheap and damn good at their job. The F-35 is going to be an expensive flying coffin. With further upgraded avionics and weapons systems and possibly slightly tweaked airframe design these planes can rule the skies for another 30+ years. But the government won't do that because Lockheed doesn't make as much money that way.
  3. I see super maneuverability dogfights with WW1 speeds and turn radius in 20 ton mammoths and high off bore-sight heat seeking missiles
  4. I couldn't believe we tapped wing tips after he rammed my landing gear. I was very happy to have recorded that one considering it is the first and likely last time that will ever happen to me. In the third one I knew very well I wasn't going to survive when the initial 2 chased me down to the deck and then it just got uglier by the second. I tried to see if I could bring it in but my pilot was too wounded to pull out of it enough and I hit too hard. I should have let the guy go in the first one when I took off his rudder. Another enemy even flew right in between us and I could have easily switch targets. I thought about it then and every time I watch it now. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
  5. I got a bunch of the allied early war birds for just $20
  6. Wonder what it's like to drive 120-130mph through the rotorwash of an Mi-8
  7. IT FLEW! http://www.newson6.com/story/29853419/tulsa-built-bugatti-100p-replica-makes-first-flight
  8. If you went to set mission numbers you would do away with the "first to 64" and it would just be whoever has the most points at the end so long as their score was over 64. In the event of a tie two missions would be flown giving NA and EU pilots equal chance.
  9. The Mig-15 and Mig-21 I think are captivating aircraft in the same way The bf-109 is. It's a minimalist, efficient, and effective fighter. Oh, and big cannons.
  10. That thing IS beautiful.
  11. ^^^ 5 times! Be careful with your last 4 lives!
  12. just installed a gargantuan heat sink on the processor (which took a hell of a lot of work) but now even when fully loaded the CPU never breaks 52C. Now just need to install all my drivers and function check ROF so I can fly tomorrow. Can't wait.
  13. I loaded the OS to the HDD because I had the SATA set to IDE. I switched it to AHCI but I haven't had time to do much else. The stock fan that comes with the i7 4790 is WOEFULLY INADEQUATE Just running the BOIS had my CPU up over 74C. I had windows loaded and was messing around with maybe installing software and the temp went up to 85C. So I can't do shit with it until my new fan gets here this weekend, and I'll be out of town anyhow so it looks like I'm out of commission until at least next weeks FIF. Anyhow, I may experiment with putting the games on the SSD or I may just use it to record FRAPS since the higher data transfer rate doesn't create a bottleneck that can lead to reduced FPS or video quality. IDK yet, we'll see. Have a good week and weekend guys. I'll see you all again soon! S!
  14. For all who are wondering the CPU is an i7 4790k devils canyon z97 chipset mobo gtx 960 4gb video card If I'm not ready by Wednesday it's probably because I need a new CPU cooler. Reviews said it's hit and miss with stock cooler. The video card is effing huge. Good thing I have a full size case.
  15. In the middle of upgrading my pc. New processor, mobo, video card, and moving from a 120gb ssd to a 240gb ssd. Have everything in but the video card. Still installing software. Video card should go in tonight. But for some reason windows isn't recognizing the ssd even though the mobo does in the bios. Should get that figured out tonight as well. Hopefully I will be up and running again before next FIF and I should be able to fly CLoD when this is all said and done.
  16. I kept giggling when whoever was piloting the planes in the video would pull up to shoot and stall before getting guns on. Rookies.... I'm glad I'm upgrading my PC. Though CLoD looks pretty good I think DCS will become the benchmark WW2 simulator, and DCS World 2 looks damn good
  17. Interesting to hear him say the Dora was so calm on take off when the DCS version is so much of a handfull to keep straight. I always take off at full throttle with MW50 in the damn thing just to get into the air as fast as possible, and it is also a handful in landing as well. The plane just seems to zip to whichever direction the nose goes if it is not nearly perfectly straight. I haven't flown this one in a while though so maybe it has changed in light of this interview. Makes me want to try again.
  18. And be able to do proper training hops in 2 seaters
  19. As long as it isn't 300-400 contrails flying in close formation I think you're alright
  20. Every time I see a small a/c pass by my house I awlays imagine being in a 40mm aaa trying to shoot it down.
  21. If I'm not at work I would love to attend. I have fond memories of WWWringer. He will be missed. ~Salute~
  22. Looks like you took some shot in it, too. Bet that didn't help. I took the thing up and did circuits in it. Taking off is terrifying. You really have to work the rudder pedals to keep it straight. Don't "pussyfoot" around with it. I usually run the MW-50 to make sure my roll is as short as possible. For landings I've had my best with a 210kph approach speed, full nose up trim. Start flare low and make sure it's long, otherwise if you come down too hard you'll bounce the crap out of it and that gets out of hand FAST. Put her in a 3-point position and let her come down on it gently. Landing in the 3-point allows you to lock the tail wheel quickly and minimize your chances of looping. It takes practice. Lots. I got about 8 landings in an only 2 were no bounce or minimum bounce. Flies like a dream when in the air though. She loves high speed.
