J5_Ice Age Posted November 30, 2016 Report Share Posted November 30, 2016 Hi JG1 guys, I've recently installed DCS on my new computer, and am looking for some information on what JG1's involvement in the world of DCS is. I have some prior offline experience with DCS years back, but it's been a while, and I'm basically starting out again. I asked JG1_Rottermann in ROF chat if JG1 did DCS, and he said they did. As I get acquainted with the various aircraft, at some point, I would like to take it online, and I'm just trying to get some info on what kind of planes you guys fly, who flies, when, where, etc, etc, etc,... Klaiber Posted November 30, 2016 Report Share Posted November 30, 2016 Hi Ice, We do play DCS. Right now, the majority of us are flying the MiG-21bis, Mirage 2000C, F-5E and the Gazelle. But we have everything and fly everything. A group of us have also been trying to get a WW2 thing going - especially with the Spit coming out. Definitely join us whenever you're interested! East coasters get a few hours in, and the west coast contingent sticks around for another few because they ain't tired yet. Recently, we won the big Blue Flag campaign server scenario. I would equate it as the skinny kid that comes of the bench in the big game and goes to the free throw line on a charging penalty and scores the go ahead point. This week, I'm currently trying to come up to speed on the Mig-21 and the UH-1. I have a couple of others, in various stages of setting things up as I learn them, but am concentrating on those two for now. Had one heck of a rush doing the dogfight training mission in the Mig vs the F-4, repeatedly, and then came into FiF Lite to fly the Se5...it felt like my mind was running twice as fast as normal for ROF. J5_Ice Age Posted December 3, 2016 Author Report Share Posted December 3, 2016 Hey, big thanks to Klaiber for spending a significant amount of time Friday night introducing me to online play, and giving me a one-on-one training session on the Mig-21, including making the ARC and RSBN systems understandable to me. I have a lot to practice! It's the first time I've ever flown a jet aircraft online, I had lots of fun, and look forward to getting online again. On the contrary: You're explanation of the Nav systems was so comprehensive and clear that I was able to get all my essential nav controls set up to buttons, breeze through the ARC, RSBN, and PRMG tutorials with no trouble at all, and less than 24 hours later, I'm already able to navigate from beacon to beacon, intercept radials, and perform instrument landings. Britchot Posted December 5, 2016 Report Share Posted December 5, 2016 I can't recall where I heard/read that someone had difficulty taking off in the MiG-21 with the nose wheel brake engaged and they left it off during takeoff. I believe it was this last Friday but I could have read it somewhere on the forum. I'm not sure if what was said intended to mean they were allowing the nose wheel to caster or not but it kept coming back to my mind.I just wanted to clarify that the MiG-21's nose wheel brake lever is actually engaging/disengaging a brake drum on the nose wheel and not locking the nose wheel in it's current position. The reason it may be easier to line up the aircraft during the initial takeoff roll with this disengaged is probably that it applies less braking force to the nose and only the differential brake you're trying to use to point the nose down the runway. I'm not sure what percentage of braking power goes to the nose or how it's modeled in the game so that's only my theory. The important thing to note is that your braking distance will be significantly longer without this brake engaged, be it a normal landing or an aborted takeoff. J5_Ice Age Posted December 9, 2016 Author Report Share Posted December 9, 2016 I'm still waiting for the next sale to snatch up the Gazelle, the Mirage, and the F-5. I'm feeling pretty good about the Mig-21 now, at least from a newbie perspective, and have the controls setup pretty much formalized. I still only last about 60 seconds in the Fast Missions against Mig-29's. The last couple days, I immersed myself in the Mi-8, which not too long ago seemed overwhelming, but I seem to be getting a good handle on that one as well. It seems like a flying schoolbus, down to the mirrors, fans, and pneumatic brakes. Way too many different radios though. I'm really benefiting from having a backlit keyboard that allows me to choose individual key lighting, so that I can memorize the controls I've set by grouping and color, rather than having to remember to push Right Ctrl Left Shift Right Alt -R to switch pylons or something like that! If/when I get a new keyboard I'm going to really miss the little display on this one. I'm following them somewhat drone-like, because I don't know what I'm doing yet. Britchot says he is locked up, so breaks. I'm going head on to the guy, and lock him up on the radar. I don't have the correct pylon selected for radar-guided missiles, and he flashes past me, beneath, a mistake that really pisses me off at myself. I turn hard onto his six, barrel rolling as I pulled high, figured out that I had the wrong pylon selected for Radar guided missiles, fix that, now IR, and am on the guy's six, now with the R-60's. I get a tone, but Klaiber is at my low 11, on the guy ahead, and he has an IR lock too, and calls "in". He nails the SOB. A Mig-29, if I am not mistaken! This kind of stuff is Flight Simulation paradise! Brit's death was the only blight on the engagement. I wish we all could have survived it. But, as we all mentioned at the time, three 2nd Gens winning against one 4th Gen, with only one casualty, is probably a pretty good turnout. Unfortunately, immediately after I got this shot, I was driven to the deck by a radar lock, and killed by an AI blue fighter. MiG-29 maybe?
