  1. Hi there. I'm glad to pitch in a bit. For clarification: I only served in the Army (Heer) and had very limited contact to guys from the Luftwaffe (air force). And then mostly to maintainers and mechanics. So there might be subtle differences there. Plus in the simming world I'm much more familar with the structure of the US-Airforce. Concerning the Adjutant: You guys are more or less right. As far as I understand it there is however a subtle difference between the american XO and the german Adjutand. An Adjutand in the german army is much more of a personal assistand to a commanding officer. They might do the same jobs and more or less have the same function than the XO however the conception of the position of adjutand is different. I guess that has a lot to to with traditions and the prussian army where an Adjutant was more or less a personal secretary to a commanding officer. If you try to follow the historical development of the role starting as a personal Secretary/Manservant, becoming more intepentend and beeing granted additional "powers of command" you would more or less arrive at what it is today while beeing still aware of the roots and the sublte difference. I hope my really convoluted explanation made some kind of sense. I consider myself quite capable communicating in english but most of my "military vocabulary" which is not sim related is in german and some terms are really hard to translate because the equivalent translation superficially means the same but there are some connotations which just don't translate. As to the structure of the German airforce: You have Geschwader which is subdivided in Gruppen which is subdivided in Staffeln or Kompanien. In the Luftwaffe ists called a Staffel if it operates in the air and a Kompanie if it operates on the ground. A Geschwader is the hierarchical equivalent of a Regiment, the Gruppe of a Batallion and the Staffel of a Kompanie. As you can read in Klaibers example the Bundeswehr has the colloqually termed "Aküfi" or Abkürzungsfimmel. A term with which soldiers make fun of the tendency of the Bundeswehr to use acronyms whereever possible. FlgGrp TaktLwG 73 for example translated to: Fliegende Gruppe, Taktisches Luftwaffen Geschwader 73. (Flying group, Tactical Airforce Geschwader 73) About the OPSO part: What is the specific job of the OPSO? I couldn't find a usefull and complete "job description". What you have to remeber is, that the structure of the Luftwaffe is, in parts, quite different to the US equivalent. They train together and can operate together but the internal organisation is still pretty different even though it has a lot of similarities. Thats not surprising if you a) think of the historical lineage of each airforce and b) consider that the mission, and the capabilities are quite different. Edit: I wated to add someting: The german Army sometimes reorganizes units somewhat or uses other organisation scemes if those units are supposed to work together with different Nationalities. The Stab(HQ) of a unit which a combination of different NATO nationalities (So a Joint Bundeswehr and NATO Stab(HQ)) isstructued in Joint Staff Functions in accordance with Nato. Other examples are the "Deutsch Französische Brigarde" (German- French Brigade) or the Eurokorps. An interesting tidbid in that regard is, that the Luftwaffe regularily combines parts of different Geschader to form temporary so called Einsatzgeschwader. Those Geschwader are for use in specific conflicts and exist only for a limited time. For Example the Einsatzgeschwader 1 (Air Force Operational Wing 1) existed from 1995-2001 and was formed parts of JaboG 32 (Jagdbombergeschwader 32 or Strikefighterwing 32) and TaktLwG 51„I“ (Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 "Immelmann" or Tactical Airforce Wing 51). JaboG 32 is a strike Fighter Wing and TaktLwG51 is a reconnaissance wing.
  2. Those stripes don't seem to be rank insignia but mean something else. But I think you figured out asmuch. I sadly don't know much about the uniforms and insignia of the NVA(Nationale Volksarmee). I'm from the western part of germany and I'm too young to have remembered anything about such details even if I was born in the east.
  3. I can only echo what @Bussard already wrote: If you can spend the money or are able to save up for it good pedals, like the crosswinds, are a game changer and really enhance the experience. The crosswinds are, in the realm of premium pedals, the most cost effective option in my opinion. They have a excelent build quality and Milan is a nice guy and always keen to help if any trouble arises or if there are any questions.
  4. Indeed. I still remember the awfull white cases with sharp corners and undeburred interiors. The choices out there now are really way beyond that. And theres something for everybody and every taste which is awesome.
  5. @Lipfert Thats a really nice looking Build! I alway go with Fractal Define R5 cases. Its a nice case to build with, has dust filters and sound insulation, is understated but still good looking and has no windows. I'm not big on RGB lighting and it has the benefit that I don't have to worry about cable management that much. Plus the pc is integrated in my rig and has its place behind the monitors. So I wouldn't be able to see it anyhow and the lighting might actually be distracting. But I'm really amazed by a good looking build you where able to achieve. @Wittmann I can really understand your reasoning for not getting a new graphics card. The card was about half of the cost of my build but since I have been planing to upgrade for over a year I decided to just go for it now while cards are actually available from trustworthy distributors.
  6. The motherboard is a MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Carbon WIFI. Thanks for the tip regarding XMP. I will do so. S!
  7. Hi Guys, the new PC has arrived and I was able to test ist out for the first time last Friday. Because I made my intention to get a new computer quite public I thought I would share my experiences and the performance improvement I got. With my old rig I used to get 35-45 FPS with some settings on high and most on medium, no SSAA and Forest visibility, Clutter, forest Detail etc. significantly reduced. With the new Rig and approximatly the same Settings I'm getting around 200 FPS. Right now I am able to use the highest settings possible and still get 65 FPS (with SSAA set to 2). The first time in the sim my jaw dropped because of the performance improvement. The Specs are: I7 10700K RTX 3080TI 32 gigs of Ram 1 x 500 GB M2 SSD for the operating system 1 x 1000 GB M2 for all of the sims. 1 x 500 GB SSD I already had for other games 1 x 1000 GB for miscellaneous data 850 Watt Seasonic Prime Powersupply I think the next step for me is going to look into VR headsets. I guess the new PC should be powerfull enough to comfortably run DCS in VR. If anybody has any recomondations concerning VR headsets I would be glad to get some suggestions.
  8. Hello and welcome to JG1! Since you are based in europe we will surely fly with each other. Looking forward to it!
  9. Very good @Yogi. I Alway get frustrated and stop trying. I just cant get used to the engine lag.
  10. Thanks a lot Klaiber. I already ordered the Parts so its already too late I actually work in IT but if I have to work with hardware its mostly server stuff. I only really bother with consumer or gaming hardware when I want to upgrade (or when something new and exiting is getting released). For me it was mostly a cost vs. performance decision. I talked about my thoughts concerning cost vs performance with my girlfriend and she encouraged me to get what I wanted as long as I could afford it. We had a pretty heart warming talk where she advised me to not listen to the part of me that is trying to tell me that I'm not worth what I really want. The more I think about that conversation the more I think that the second big thing I spend money on this year should be an engagement ring. And a VR Headset of course
  11. Hi Guys, a small Update. I just ordert the parts for the new Machine. It cost quite a bit more than I planed for at first but I had the money and its for the only "expensive" hobby I have. I probably wouldn't have gone ahead If my girlfriend didn't encourage me to spend the money on the new machine. Now I'm going to brew a nice cup of tea and try to calm my nerves a bit.
  12. Hi Guys, I just got a nice bonus and a raise and I'm thinking, that now might be a good time to think about building a new PC. My current Machine ist still sufficient (GTX 1070, 16gb Ram, Ryzen Prozessor => actually don't know what Model that is and can't look it up right now. It was the first smaller consumer model, two HDDs and two 500gb SSDs) The computer is still sufficient for most stuff but I would like to try out VR and thats not possible with that machine. My questions would be: - Ryzen VS Intel: Ryzen is way more cost efficient but Intel still has the best single core performance. - Would you recomment an RTX 3070 or would it be better to just fork over an additional 700 euro and get an 3080 or the "TI" version? - What motherboard would you recommend? I'm not up to date with the available Models at the Moment I could just read up on most of the stuff but I hope to get some input and recommendations from you guys and here of your experiences with up to date hardware as well as your experience with it. Thanks a lot! Balge
  13. Had some time to try the hind yesterday. It flies like i thought it would: like a tank. Really nice feeling. I don't really know how to work the CCIP feature of the sight yet and Petrovic and me are currently not getting along but I guess that will get better with practice.
  14. I have to correct myself: its 32gb to download but 61gb to unpack. Its not going to take me 24hrs but I still have about three to four hours to go... Can't wait!
  15. Over 60 gb... ist going to take a while...
  16. The fontseater is going to have quite a bit of work on his hands to guide those missles onto the target. Really looking forward to the release date!
  17. While we are on the topic of family heirlooms: I still have a clock which used to belong to my grandfather. The details are a bit muddled (he died when I was three years old so I couldn't ask him myself) but according to my mum he took it out of his own or his friends Bf 109 after he or his friend crash landed over france. According to "family legend" the clock still shows the time of the crash since nobody has fiddled with it since. Its a Junghaus J30Bz. It doesnt work and the brezel as well as a lever below the knob on the button has been broken off.
  18. The F15 is an earlier Aircraft. I read somewhere (I think it was a forum with lots of F16 maintainers in it) that the F16 has a limit of 600knots at ground level due to the canopy heating up and then deforming due to air friction. During the development of the F16 getting the canopy right was quite a problem and pilots of the first F16As complained about distortion. Plus compared to the F15 the F16 canopy is quite a bit smaller. I guess most of the time the cost and complications of a single piece canopy is just not woth it for the benefit it provides. The difference between the F16 canopy and the F15 canopy (as an example) also should not be as great in real life as we dont have the ability to focus beyond the canopy frame in the sim. Just to be clear: I'm not an expert in the field and most of the stuff I wrote are things I read about and my own thoughts. Pleas take everything with a grain of salt.
  19. The "two weeks" thing is a joke. I dont really know where it came from but every time that question is asked the reply is going to be "two weeks™ " sooner or later.
  20. Thanks a lot! I missed the thread somehow and just found out while browsing the Roster Congratulations to @Gus . Its really good to have you flying with us again!
  21. The more I hear about VR the more it faszinates me. However Im relly not shure if my pc could handle it and I guess it will be on the less powerful side compared to what most people are running dcs in VR with.
  22. Welcome. Hope to fly with you soon
  23. Thanks a lot for the warm welcome. I'm really looking forward to flying with you guys
