JG I "Richthofen" - FIFXXV Session 2 (22 October 2016)
-Hawkeye- replied to Klaiber's topic in Squadron News
Gentlemen, well done! S! -
Always great pictures, Baron. High quality images too. Thanks!

Well in the case of the CPU coolers, they're completely sealed units that never need any kind of servicing. I agree that the cooling capacity provided is over-kill in many cases, and probably only really useful if you're going to overclock your CPU pretty severely. But they do make smaller single-fan units, or lesser dual fan ones. The thing I like about them is that the heatsink/pump unit that actually sits on the CPU is smaller and more compact than a decent air cooler. Besides the space issue you mentioned, the larger air coolers are tall enough and top-heavy enough to exert a lot of uneven pressure through leverage on the CPU because they want to sag when sticking out sideways from the vertically mounted motherboard (some new case designs eliminate this by mounting the motherboard horizontally). Still a good air cooler can be just fine for about anything you're going to do with it, and is a lot less expensive too. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 is a good example of this, and they've been around for a long time. S!

Only "a dash" of "gent"? Be serious

JG I "Richthofen" - FIFXXV Session 1 (15 October 2016)
-Hawkeye- replied to Klaiber's topic in Squadron News
Very well done, honored recipients! -
So which category does he assign himself to? Or is he immune to his own classifications....outside the norm....special? By being members here, we're all disdained equally....stereotyped. Superior, much?

Also wanted to add, that I hope the Blue team really uses their section of this forum and communicates ideas, comments and pilot reports with each other a lot. This place should be your second home; please use it. Know that nobody here can see your private area. There's a lot of good information here; get used to where it is, and take full advantage of it. FiF can be complex, and I think there are few, if any (besides Butzzell) that knows everything about the missions. It can be easier to just look at the part that applies to you, and if your whole team can do that, you'll rock. S! again!

Great job to you all. I think you outscored us, but mostly just wanted to say, you guys were tough as nails in the air. I got a taste of that in the dry run session the week before, and you really kept it up for the start of the official event. It was good to see so many of you that have been absent recently. A shout out to J5 Joseph Mai, with whom two of us had a real knock-down, drag-out fight over our side. Superb piloting, only one of us enemies came away alive, and he darned near pulled it off. You know you've had an epic fight when, as your enemy is shot down and ditching in a river, your weapon clicks empty, and you're obliged to land near the river bank with a damaged engine, your wing man dead. In my mind, I walked over to the river bank and helped him out, and led our captured foe toward a hot meal, some dry clothes, and the end of his war. What a great matchup the Nieuports are, with the Halb D.II's. You guys use them to the max. Also, the furball at the end of the session that occurred as you attacked our HQ was awesome. I loved how those two-seaters were in there, with real gunners in the rear, and on the attack, cooperating with the D.II's. I think our guys took a couple of you down, but you really beat up on us, and it seemed like most of you flew safely E toward home, just as the session was ending. I think you completed your objective, too. Thanks again, I hope you all keep showing up and doing more of the same, and when you're flying the Entente side, keep it up. We'll try to do the same, and I'm sure this FiF event will be one to remember. Salute!

Thanks you bum....it was still fun, somehow

It's true Alt-Tab doesn't work anymore (since not running in Full Screen mode). That seems like a lot better fix than the thing I stumbled upon! Thanks Dutch, definately gonna try that instead!

I got an email from vonGuber that mentioned that the comms were going to be on the BH TS3 server. He mentioned all are welcome and gave the connection info, but I won't post the TS info here....not sure they want their PW made public. Probably best to ask somebody who knows a BH member, or somebody close to them. In any case, I know it.

I'm sure there's a lot we could help you with, Manu. There's so much to consider, that's it's probably best to talk to you directly on TS for this. Hopefully you have the JG1 TS info; if not, let us know.

Looks like it would support everything he listed, at a great price.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132565 Looks like the MB is cheaper on NewEgg, too.
-
Also try to find out if your processor supports 28 or 40 PCIe lanes. Since the M.2 slot uses PCIe, that could have an effect on the speed certain PCIe slots could run (x8, x16, etc), and you might have limitations on what slot your video card can be used in. D/L the MB manual and study it closely before you buy.

What's "cooling bracket"? If it offers more space at the top, that would be a good thing. Honestly, unless you're going to over-clock, the H100i is really over-kill. That USB interface that it comes with and connects to a 2.0 pin header can be buggy and cause problems too. Luckily you don't have to use it but it's throwing away most of what makes it more expensive than other models, if you end up not using it.
-
Oh yeah, I have that CPU cooler, too. See those voltage regulator heat sink covers at the top edge of the MB? Depending on your case, those can interfere with the cooler fans. If you get a large case, it wouldn't likely be an issue; but a medium sized case or smaller it might be, depending on the design. Use caution if you don't want to be cutting/filing/grinding on stuff.

Memory: for 16 GB, assuming this is a 4-channel MB, it would be better to have 4 x 4 GB DIMMs, to take advantage of the 4-channel feature Optical drive... think we've already discussed this...guess you have your reasons. Money better spent elsewhere, such as: Bigger size of the Samsung 950, 512 is great, 1 GB even better if they make one. Be really careful reading the specs on how the M.2 slot works on this MB, see what it takes to make it run full speed, what limitations that imposes on the rest of the slots, if any. See if you can find reviews from people who've used it on that MB. Magnetic drive, you wouldn't need one if you got a bigger SSD, but if you must, an external one offers better immunity to viruses, etc.

Here is a link to Scott's obituary, where you can post a memory, etc. http://www.conejomountain.com/obituaries/Scott-Edwin-Owens-4912658326/#!/TributeWall I posted one under my old BH pilot name.

Mein Gott! That was just yesterday, it seems! Thanks, FS!

My post on the BH forum asking if there is any contact information: Post: Same as what's been posted here, but asking if there's any contact information. I think Klaiber's suggestion is excellent.

I just found out that Scott Owens (BH_Osten) has died of a massive heart attack. He was a member or Black Haze from WAY back in the RB3D days, and if you'll check the historical stats for FiF, you'll see his name in there many, many times. Scott, along with Dutch, established Black Haze in Rise of Flight. Only because of both of their personal involvements, I joined Black Haze as my first squadron after flying as a free agent for a long time in Rise of Flight. Back when my old squadron, Lafayette Escadrille (LE) was disappearing in RB3D, these guys took me in as an ally and we flew with and battled against JG1 to the best of our abilities. It was always great to be a part of that team, and later in RoF as a member of their sqaudron, when so many new names appeared, the original guys were almost forgotten. I swear to you, never an angry word directed at another every came out of Scott's mouth; and that's a record few of us can equal. THAT is how I remember him! Here is my reply to the message I got: OMG so hard to believe! A tear is in my eyes. He always sounded like he was 20-something on comms; he was honestly one of the nicest people I've ever flown with, and I've done that since way back in the RB3D days when the BH guys took me in as an ally when the rest of my squadron was disappearing. This is really a loss to the WWI flight sim community. Scott was an awesome guy and one of the few I was on a first-name basis with. God be with him! This is very unexpected news, please join me in remembering Scott, if you had the honor of flying and talking with him. S! Scott!! from your old friends!
