Seems odd to me, especially during that time period, and the described mission of the aircraft that anyone within the government would summarily order the destruction of the aircraft.  Has the REAL reason ever been declassified or become public record?

I think part of the reason for the destruction of all existing aircraft was fear that the Soviets had got a spy somewhere on the inside; after the cancellation of the programme, it was thus considered best to get rid of everything. And when the Mitrokhin archive was released in the 90s, it turned out that the Soviets had indeed apparently got hold of some of the plans.
