il2 Version 4.702

Kameraden,

For whatever reason, this patch messed up my VR Settings which had been running smoothly with my G2 Reverb.

If I don't use HDR the game is very dark, could always counter with Gamma but for right now I'm using HDR. I've disabled Bloom in the startup.cfg

I'm also experimenting with Sharpen versus MSAA x2, right now I'm using either or but not both.

Preset: Ultra

Screen resolution: 1280x768

UI Scale: 100%

Shadows quality: Off

Mirrors: Simple

Distant landscape detail: x4

Canopy reflections: Off

Horizontal draw distance: 150km

Landscape filter: Blurred

Terrain roughness: Low

Grass quality: Normal

Clouds quality: High

Antialiasing type: MSAA

Target FPS: Off

Dynamic resolution: Full

Antialiasing: either 2x if Sharpen is unchecked or Off is Sharpen is On (results pending).

Gamma correction: 0.8

Enable VR HMD: Checked

HDR: Checked

Sharpen: either unchecked if Antialiasing is at 2x or Checked if AA is Off

Use 4K textures: Checked

Distant buildings: Checked

I have Reprojection Off in Steam VR per game (il2 Sturmovik Great Battles added) graphics settings and SuperSampling on, 100% resolution (running the global tab at 50% resolution). I am not forcing DX11.

Mild overclock on my GTX 3090 (not using even half the video memory).

Getting between 80-90 fps solid. Using V0.2exp of VRNS and it's working.

Interesting.   I'm going to give that FPSVR a try.

Which open vr runtime have you set in steamvr?   I notice you didn't quote a SS value or motion smoothing setting for OpenXR development tools.

Jaus,

I'm using the OpenXR Runtime on the Steam VR Settings > Developer tab. I've left OpenXR Developer Tools Motion Reprojection Disabled at the moment (I think).

I just spent a session with FPSVR and I'm completely baffled by SS %'s.   I also have steamvr set to use OpenXR runtime.

With OpenXR Dev tools set to 100% SS, and SteamVR set to 150% (global) and 100%( app) , The FPSVR SteamSS value reads 75%.

     ???

Are you seeing the same thing?

I've seen and read so many differing thesis on how NVIDIA, OpenXR, and SteamVR-global/ SteamVR-app supersampling work I'm wondering if anyone really knows.

I had thought that OpenXR trumped the SteamVR settings if you were using OpenXR runtime.   I've also read a developer note that says SS values in SteamVR are multiplicative i.e.  if you have 100% global and 50% app you should get 50%, if you have 50% global and 50% app you would get 25%.   But when I had set 100% OpenXR,  100% SteamVR-global, and 50% SteamVR-app  I saw "SteamVR SS : 25% in the FPSVR overlay.   ???

Jaus,

I'll be around tonight to test, even stream and check results.

Just to clarify,  our testing mission was the "Alb DV - Hunting Party"  mission under Missions->Flying CIrcus Vol1 Scenarios  (FC2 only)

Several planes, buildings vehicles and trees nearby.

My big takeaway from the evening was how much my CPU (I7 8700K 3.7ghz)  is bottlenecking my FPS.    In casual flight at altitude I was steady at 90 FPS (RTX3090/ HP Reberb G2),  but start moving head quickly, or rolling fast, or making tight turns, and I did see a momentary drop of 10-20 FPS in the GPU.    However, in the "Hunting Party" mission where you have multiple objects to render I found that my framerate quickly dropped to around 50 fps and the performance graph in FpsVR clearly showed the burden on the CPU as the culprit.

The other big takeaway is how baffling the whole idea of SuperSampling is.   With OpenXR,  SteamVR and three different places to enter a SS value it is difficult to make progress as you don't know how they play together.    Also, although Lipfert and I have the same graphic setup, and took careful steps to sync our settings,  in SteamVR->Settings->VIdeo my per eye resolution values at given percentages were significantly higher than those Lipfert observed at the same percentages.    We could find no explanation for this.

Still learning.... still scratching my head.

Jaus,

What is your per eye resolution? 100% for me is 3160 x 3092.

In SteamVR my PER at 100% is 3168x3096.    Wasn't yours substantially lower the other night?

Also, I got the 240mm liquid cooler, but I'm not going to be able to get it in my case.   I've ordered the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 120 instead.   I read/watched several really good reviews including temperature management performance.

Jaus,

Yes, but my Global slider was at 50% 😄
