Thomas reacted to J5_Hotlead in Well...I'm back! :DThings took a really unexpected turn for me yesterday. Basically, my parents met with me and told me that they would be fine with me returning to flying ROF. This naturally came as quite a (pleasant) shock for me, as when my parents and I decided I should stop flight sims and PC games, I thought that this decision was pretty much set in stone and not subject to change.
Now, it's not that my parents brutally swooped in and forced me to give up simming lol. It was a joint decision we made, albeit a very hard one for me. And I still believe it was the right move at that time. Flight sims (plus a whole lot of other PC games) had really gotten a hold on me to the point where I wasn't trying any new hobbies and sacrificing time with my family. I know in JG1, one of our core mottoes is "real life comes first," but things had gotten to the point where real life was starting to take a backseat for me. Also, especially as my younger brother (Furious Flea) started to battle with ulcerative colitis and was hospitalized, it was crystal-clear that I needed to be available for my family rather than spending 2-3 hours on my PC every night.
Anyway, so that's why my parents and I jointly decided to pull the plug not just on ROF but every PC game. At that time, we thought that I would never do it again and just leave it all behind. That's why they suggested I sell my gear so that I wouldn't be tempted to re-enter it. So, when I submitted my resignation from the group, I honestly thought that I was done for good. I closed down my Twitch channel, sold my gear, and said my goodbyes.
That's why yesterday came as such a shock for me! I believe my time on leave was ultimately was a good thing. I started new pursuits, learned some new hobbies, and spent time deepening my relationship with my family in a way I probably wouldn't have if I was still flying every night. But now, I think I can put ROF in its proper place in my life and take to the skies again!
I'm planning on flying one night a week, and not on Saturdays. I've grown to like having my Saturdays free, so I wouldn't be doing FiF. But honestly, FiF wasn't what I missed most about ROF. It was just the pure awesomeness of flying sorties with the guys in JG1 and the adrenaline rush of dogfighting that I missed the most. And now that I've been away, I think I am going to appreciate and enjoy that one night a week so much more! I’ll be reopening my Twitch channel too, so really looking forward to that as well. Finally, I've decided to focus purely on ROF, and later on Flying Circus. With only so much time available, it makes sense to focus on what I really love.
So yeah...I'm back! Who’s ready to send those Entente boys down in flames? :D

The FIF 2018 "Spring Campaign" has officially come to an end!
After 8-weeks of bloody fighting, both the Blue and Red teams have managed to win one Phase of play within the 2018 Spring Campaign.
As a result, the Spring Campaign for Flanders In Flames has now ended in stalemate!
Stalemate may not seem exciting, but from a tournament perspective it really is.
Not only does this tie show just how evenly matched both sides were, but it is a testament to the dedication and determination of both the Blues and the Reds. Week after week, you all have brought your best to the field of battle. And for me, it was thrilling to watch the scores and stats, knowing that 7 days later, everyone was going to try and outdo themselves. During our Summer hiatus, I'm going to miss this.
I'm very proud to be apart of this tournament, and am happy that it has helped bring the Rise of Flight community together. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again in the Fall, after Jasta 5's Black September.
Let us lift our glasses filled with our favorite libations and toast our virtual opponents. Prost! Salut!
To celebrate the conclusion of the Spring Campaign, here is the FIF campaign ribbon.
Blue for the Blue Team. Red for the Red Team. And light blue to signify the temporary ending of virtual hostilities.

Small version:
And as always, thank you to every pilot who flew!
Without your continued support, this tournament would not be able to function!

Thomas reacted to Maushake in Exhibition in Montreal (and Vimy)S! All,
I was reminded of this today and thought I'd post it here before I forget, since it may be of interest to some of our group who are able to get either to Vimy this summer or to Montreal over the winter:
https://warflowers.ca
The subjects of the exhibition are two members of my family: my great-grandfather Lt.Col. George Stephen Cantlie, original commander of the 42nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada, and his daughter Celia, my great-aunt. He died before I was born, but I knew her a little when I was growing up; she died in 2007, aged 94.

Thomas reacted to J5_Hotlead in Good bye, my friendsHess: Thank-you so much for the kind words - they mean a lot to me. It has been great knowing you too! I've enjoyed seeing your screenshots and had fun flying with you whenever you had some time for ROF. You're a first-rate pilot, man.
Thomas: As with Pfeil, it's been fun to read your reports in FiF. Also the way you guys knock down enemy planes in Il-2 is astounding. Thanks for the well-wishes - same goes for you, man!
Baron: Thank-you! I have really admired how you lead Jasta 6. You run a tight ship, and it shows in J6's discipline and cohesion while fighting. You guys are the group that we send in during FiF if we really want to tear enemies up. Salute!
Wilhelm_Reinhard: The feeling is mutual, I assure you. I sincerely appreciate your viewing my streams and giving me useful feedback on how to improve them. Thanks for that! Blue skies and tailwinds to you too, Sir!
Kliegmann: Lol!!! Yeah. I've even considered changing my name and moving to a different state to throw you off the scent. Seriously though, I will always look back with fondness at the time where you took me under your wing in BOS. I learned so much! Thanks for the kind words too. I'll miss you!
Etzel: Thanks so much for the kind words! The work I put into the community was nothing but a pleasure chiefly because of pilots like you, Sir. I have great memories of sharing the skies of Aces Falling with you. When you applied to join JG1, I was thrilled - "Etzel's joining!" Wishing you all the best too!
Dudley: Thank-you! You are a solid wingman and an expert special missions pilot. I've always admired how you take the time to study mission objectives until you are absolutely sure how they work so that when it's make-or-break time in an event, you can perform exceptionally. It has been an honor flying with you these years!
Butzzell: I have so many wonderful memories flying with you that I've lost count. I've loved hearing your laugh-out-loud, spur-of-the-moment quips. Also, Flanders in Flames is your baby, and I've really, really loved flying in it. Thank you for all the work in the mission editor, for organizing our Monday flights, and for designing the beautiful livery I had the honor of flying under! I had always dreamed of having my own skins, and you made that a reality. Thank-you! I'll miss you!
Maushake: Thanks for being such an awesome wingman! I still remember winning the Bier Stein with you a few years back. Those were good times. Thanks also for the well-wishes! Wishing you blue skies and awesome opportunities in your acting career!
Sturtz: It was awesome getting to know you, man! I always had a blast winging with you. I'm thrilled you like it here at JG1! Trust me, the relationships only get better with time. Salute and blue skies!

Thomas reacted to Barton in So, I’ll probably never see the light of day againFirst off, photobucket is garbage. But that’s not what I’m posting about.
I’ve taken a break from flight simming to pursue a personal goal of mine and that is coming along. I was hoping to get away from simming altogether but having a new wheel set up, a gaming rig, and some excess lumber I put some elbow grease into a dedicated racing rig. With a $40 Racing seat I pulled from a Toyota Celica at a local U-Pick it worked damn well. I had made some errors that I needed to correct to make it really work right but I never really got around to it until now.
However, when I decided to modify the setup I decided that racing sims weren’t as exciting as other things (and iRacing is a money pit) so when I pulled screws, recut some of the components, added new components, and did a little bit of redesign....well....this happened:

Thomas reacted to Pfeil in What are you listening to?Geo blocking of videos is the most idiotic thing I have seen since long time.
Who came up with that should be shot right next to the guy who invented region lock of DVD's
You can allways find other videos so why bother locking it?
And I'm glad you found them.

Thomas reacted to Lee in Warbirds Over the Beach 2017I worked the Airshow Saturday. Morning was beautiful. Blue sky, gentile breeze and the day was shaping up to be perfect for an airshow. A few planes made test flights.
At 12:15 we started to move the guests back to the spectator line in preparation for flight operations. Then a sea fog blew in from the north, the wind picked up and the ceiling dropped.
No flying.
In order to provide some entertainment for our guest, many of the aircraft were started up and taxied along the spectator line so everyone could get a good look at each airplane and at least hear the engines running. Not the same as flying, but the best we could do in the circumstances.
I didn’t work Sunday, but it was overcast with a 1500 ft ceiling, and I understand they did fly.
