Weirdest VR Sensation So Far?

So for those of you with a VR headset, what's your weirdest sensation you've experienced so far? Flying or not?

 

I definitely remember the weird sense of experience-proper vertigo I had the first time I flew in it and started doing hard turns, but I just had one of my weirdest experiences yet.

 

I came in for a landing in 109 in IL2, and I'm applying the breaks to stop rolling, and at the moment the plane stopped moving, my body involuntarily leaned forward, as if I'd hit the breaks in real life. Very strange!

The weirdest sensation I've had is in Elite Dangerous.

 

I had just gotten VR, and was trying it out in game.  My stick and throttle is generally in the same location as the virtual stick and throttle inside the cockpit.

 

As I'm flying around, my virtual hand flexed and moved on its own (as it does).  It startled me, as I had gotten so immersed in it that I stopped paying attention to what was my real arm and what was virtual.

Ha! And I’ve definitely tried to set real world objects down on VR surfaces 😫

I stood up in Elite Dangerous and looked around the cockpit (the pilot stays seated, though) and I went to grab the headrest of the seat to help looking around.  However, it was the ED ship seat, not my desk chair, I swiped nothing but air.

I have tried to work the UFC and MFCD OSB keys in the Warthog with my IRL hands more times than I am comfortable admitting. I did that because I had been running second monitor with the Thrustmaster MFD keys and MFCD window export so there was a lot of muscle memory to get past. 

 

When I first got Oculus Rift, I went planetside for some buggy ops with Brit and Klaiber and got such motion sickness that I had lingering nausea for three days.

 

Didn't try it again for a few days and then when flying a Warthog on the Navada map I was doing a low pass to VID a Humvee and that got me. I powered through it and have no issues now.

 

In May I sat my dad down to have a go at the Huey and he got motion sickness as well, so I guess it runs in the familiy? Probably could have trained it out of him if we had more time. He has a ton of off the books OH-6 time from his national guard days. They trained him to be a "pinch hitter" crew chief/observer in the Loach so that he could escape and land the aircraft in case the pilot got hit. Probably not entirely legal but it was the ramp up to Gulf 1 and it's the Guard so rules are suggestions.

Yeah the "life-like" fidgeting the character does is a little freaky at first.

Well, I'm glad it's not just me.

 

I haven't had any weird sensations in a while.  I think I've gotten used to it, and to the games I own.

 

But if I got a new VR game, I'm sure I'd have the same thing happen.

I still have a weird sensation after landing. It feels too me that that the plane is still moving forward even though its parked.

Not sure if it's weird, but it sure felt real in VR.

 

On final during our MiG-21bis practice, while landing I turned around to click full flaps on the left panel. The LMB failed, clicked down but did not come back up again and I could not fully extend flaps. I messed with it and then realized I was not getting that button clicked.

 

As I looked up, I had just dropped below 330 KPH as my AoA had increased.

 

In brutal slow motion the aircraft rolled onto it's back and I face planted (it felt very real, even closed my eyes at the end).

 

It felt horribly real......

I've done that too!  Was playing a Nature VR game, where you walk around and see stuff.  I sometimes use it when I'm cycling, so I don't have to stare at a wall.

 

Either way, I was heading for a cliff and didn't turn away in time.  Going over it, I had this instinctive reaction to throw my hands forward.  I was able to not do that (as I would have looked odd).  But the very strong feeling was definitely there.
