  1. Yes. The G-meter is on the upper left of the HUD. Just above the air speed carrot and vertical air speed scale. You can see at 19 seconds, he gets up to 8.2.
  2. Hi All, Welcome to the International Flanders In Flames Online War! If you have not already signed up in the past, and are a new pilot to FIF, please post below with the following information: Your In-Game Name: [if applicable] Your Squadron affiliation (with squadron website if possible): Your preferred side (Central, Entente or Don't Care): Your timezone: Your post within this thread is very important, as it lets us know who to give forum access to. After posting within this thread, please be patient. It may take up to 24 hours before your request to join a group has been approved. Please note: the two teams in FIF are not affiliated with either in-game side! After a campaign phase, they will swap sides, allowing everyone to fly all aircraft. If you don't get assigned to your preferred side the first time, you'll eventually be rotated to it (usually within 4 to 6 weeks). Thanks and Salut! JG1_Klaiber
  3. Thought this was interesting: http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/watch-an-f-16-save-the-life-of-its-unconscious-pilot-1786574961 I wasn't aware that they had installed an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System on the F-16. I'm sure Sully 2 is glad they did.
  4. Drucker! Great to hear from you. It's been too long. Sorry that I'm only now responding. I'm just getting back from a vacation. I'll drop you an email tonight. Talk more soon!
  5. I saw that. I'll still enjoy the hell out of the movie.
  6. I've always loved this picture. It's just so surreal to see. If you're interested, here is some information regarding the facility: http://rarehistoricalphotos.com/germans-testing-messerschmitt-bf-109/ Supposedly, the facility remained so secret that the Allied air forces never bombed it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luftfahrtforschungsanstalt There are a few other pictures online that you can find in google.
  7. It looks good! I always love Russian WW2 movies. If anyone is curious, here is the historical information on the actual events that the movie is depicting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panfilov%27s_Twenty-Eight_Guardsmen I also noticed (@ 2:16) that the Russian Military Historical Society (RMHS) is involved somehow. This is the same group that funded Ilya Muromets.
  8. It looks interesting. Definitely a bit chaotic. Perhaps too much for me as well.
  9. It is sad. But we still have "cover your sixes", and quite possibly "break a leg" (through a Yiddish corruption).
  10. I always used to hear that "the whole nine yards" originated from nine yards of belt fed ammunition on aircraft machine guns. But it pre-dates WWII, and first appears in print in 1907. That means that it was probably floating around in speech since at least the 1890s. And it also means that the second machine gun theory, a British Vickers, is out too. The Vickers went into service in 1912. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_whole_nine_yards The best explanation I've heard so far is that it's related to standard lengths of fabric, used in the garment industry, which were usually cut into lengths of 3, 6 or 9. Or, that it means nothing. And that it's just a turn of phrase, like "the whole shebang". Though, in the 1870s, I think "shebang" referred to a vehicle. http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/the-whole-shebang.html So who knows...
  11. Great reviews! Thanks for posting them Somnus. If you're interested, I highly recommend The Roots of Blitzkrieg: Hans von Seeckt and German Military Reform, by James S. Corum, and it's companion book The Luftwaffe: Creating the Operational Air War, 1918-1940. If you've ever wanted an in-depth understanding as to what exactly happened to the German military during the Weimar Republic, and how it pulled itself back together again, these are excellent reads. Plus, Corum's notes and references are impeccable. I've discovered a lot of other wonderful books based on his recommendations. And I've been able to avoid a few disasters too, like Hoyt's Angels of Death: Goering's Luftwaffe. I won't even link it, because it's awful. Either way, James S. Corum is a retired US Army Lt. Col., and is an air-power and counter-insurgency historian. And he puts a lot of emphasis on demystifying and de-propagandizing the Wehrmacht by bringing the readers attention to the shear volume of badly researched and poorly written material, authored by non-historians, published post-1945. In his mind, those crap books (like Hoyt's Angels of Death) have done a lot of damage to our understanding of the Second World War. He says in The Luftwaffe book, for example, that you really shouldn't be writing a serious work on the Wehrmacht if you: don't read German, don't have a background as a military historian, and don't have access to primary sources. He talks a lot about how reliance on secondary sources has created a lot of false information. Either way, it's very interesting stuff.
  12. As J5 posts more information, it should become easier to register. I don't even know if they've made the announcement on the Rise of Flight boards yet.
  13. S! All, Jasta 5 is going to host a great campaign called Black September. It will be run on Saturdays in September (the 10th, 17th and 24th) at 1700-2130 GMT on the J5 server. I highly recommend people check it out! JG1 will definitely be participating. And FIF XXV will be delayed until early October to allow everyone to fly in both events! You can register for Black September here: http://www.jasta5.org/events/blacksept/blacksept.htm The rules should be posted soon! Expect more information from Jasta 5 in the coming weeks.
  14. It was a very good run! And a very good shot by Chunko. Thanks for posting this Barton! Looking forward to your next installment.

Pretty much. BOS/M's unlock system necessitates that you fly the single player campaign in order to gradually be given access to the aircraft modifications. So, if you want to remove the rear-facing pilot armor from your cockpit in a Bf 109, or use gondola cannons in a Bf 109, etc. you have to "earn" it. Now, 777 has said that they felt this unlock system was far better than the DLC modifications available in ROF. And Jason and the rest have never understood why people in the community were so upset about it. But the big difference is that in ROF, there is one game. I can choose to either buy the DLC or ignore it. And even though I hate buying DLC, it's à la carte. Which is fair. However, 777 doesn't give you that option with BOS/M. You can either have Standard accounts (two purchases of $50 USD), which gives you everything except for four "collector" aircraft. Or you can have Premium accounts (two purchases of $80 USD), which is supposed to give you everything. But in both cases, regardless of whether you shelled out $100 or $160, you still can't access the stupid modifications without playing the single-player campaign. Basically, they're including these modifcations as "features" in both versions of BOS/M, thus inferring that your initial purchase of said game (regardless of version) is the act of you paying for them. And then, forcing you to grind for it like your trying to get a new mount in World of Warcraft. Which is madness. Now, to be fair, they did recently allow owners of Premium accounts to get rid of this unlock system: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/14433-developer-diary-part-87-discussion/ But even with this, it doesn't apply to Standard accounts, unless you buy the extra "collector" aircraft. It also doesn't apply to the paint schemes, which you technically paid for also. You still need to grind for them. Then, in order to actually get rid of the unlock system, you have to do it through the website, which is dumb because this should be an option within the game. And finally, getting rid of the unlock system is irreversible, which is very dumb. To me, that screams lazy coding. If they wanted this unlock thing, it should have been a "feature" that is turned on and off with the use of a boolean (checkbox). What ever happened to paying for a game and getting the full game? Oh yeah:
  16. Hi CrAnky_Scrapper, It's great to meet you. Thanks for stopping by our boards and applying for membership. As Hotlead mentions above, a joystick and TeamSpeak are things you really can't do without. Either way, I'll drop you an email tomorrow (Thursday). Talk more then!
  17. I updated the poll.
  18. Hi All, This is an informal poll for all of those who are checking the FIF area for more information on the upcoming FIF XXV event. Assuming that FIF missions continued to be run at 2PM EDT / 6PM UTC, what weekend day would work best for people? Saturday or Sunday? Currently, there are no plans to shift the FIF missions off of Saturdays. But, there has been enough discussion regarding the possibility of Sundays that I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! And post below with any further comments or questions.
  19. S! All, The following JG I pilots are being recognized for their actions during Session 9 of Flanders In Flames XXIV (flown on 13 August 2016). Congratulations! . . . Saxon Knight's Cross of the Military Order of St. Henry Hptm. Manfred Barton, Jasta 4 (posthumously, session #9, 13 August 2016), for conspicuous personal bravery on the battlefield or, more frequently in the case of officers of higher rank, for merit in positions of great responsibility [awe-inspiring streak: 30 air victories and 1 wounded-in-actions, over 26 sorties]. Bavarian Merit 4th Class Hptm. Manfred Barton, Jasta 4 (posthumously, session #9, 13 August 2016), for bravery and merit, beyond the call of duty. [For inspiring JG1 to fly harder and do better]. OffzSt. Martin Weiss, Jasta 6 (session #9, 13 August 2016), for bravery and merit, beyond the call of duty. [For exceptional service towards the Flanders In Flames campaign]. German Army Report OffzSt. Anton Rotermann, Jasta 11, for gallantry in battle, but also extraordinary fidelity and essential service. [For the heroic completion of his duty, at the cost of his own virtual life].
  20. Hi All, I've started "spring cleaning" in preparations for FIF XXV! If you'd like to look at the FIF XXIV scores, they're still available here: http://forum.jg1.org/forum/88-fif-session-results-archive/ Additionally, all FIF XXIV registrations have been locked. FIF XXV registrations will be opened soon. Finally, the tournament information has been reset. If you need to access any of the old FIF XXIV tournament info, please let me know. The data is archived, not deleted. Thanks!
  21. Congratulations to the Red Team! The Red Team has emerged victorious within FIF XXIV! They were able to achieve a total of 86 points within 9 sessions. This was 6 more points than was needed. The Blue Team, often outnumbered, sometimes by more than 2 to 1, put up an extremely intense air campaign. Strong on the offensive, and quick on the defensive, their efforts resulted in some of the best air battles we've seen in the modern Flanders campaigns. Please take the time to congratulate the Blue Team on a job well done! Salute sirs! Moving forward, our hope is that we'll be able to even out the teams within the next month. This should be just in time for the next campaign, which is tentatively scheduled to start on Saturday, September 17th. In the meantime, to celebrate the Red Team's achievement, the FIF XXIV campaign ribbon shows both the British roundel and the German cross on a red background. As always, thank you to every pilot who flew in FIF XXIV! Without your continued support, this tournament would not be able to function. Everyone within the FIF Admin staff greatly appreciates everything that everyone has done in order to help make FIF the best event that it can be. We can't wait for FIF XXV (25)! Thanks so much! The scores for Session 9 are shown below. . . . FIF XXIV Session 9 Results (Saturday, 13 August 2016): Blue (Central) Objectives Completed: 3 Entente Aerodrome Destroyed Entente Factory Destroyed Entente Bridge Destroyed Red (Entente) Objectives Completed: 8 Central Factory Destroyed Artillery Correction (Arty Spotting) Completed Reconnaissance of front lines (Trench Map) Completed Central Bridge Destroyed Central Aerodrome Destroyed Central General Captured Trench Attack Completed Central Front Line Unit Destroyed Total Objectives Completed (FINAL): Blue Team = 9 + 8 + 7 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 8 + 4 + 3 = 65 Red Team = 8 + 11 + 8 + 12 + 11 + 9 + 9 + 10 + 8 = 86 (WINNER) . . . 22. Hi Jocassee, I'll drop you an email tonight.
  23. Very nice video Barton! I really enjoyed it. That bounce you had at 9:20 was sweet. I don't think he saw you at all until you were on top of him.
