Great reviews! Thanks for posting them Somnus. If you're interested, I highly recommend The Roots of Blitzkrieg: Hans von Seeckt and German Military Reform, by James S. Corum, and it's companion book The Luftwaffe: Creating the Operational Air War, 1918-1940. If you've ever wanted an in-depth understanding as to what exactly happened to the German military during the Weimar Republic, and how it pulled itself back together again, these are excellent reads. Plus, Corum's notes and references are impeccable. I've discovered a lot of other wonderful books based on his recommendations. And I've been able to avoid a few disasters too, like Hoyt's Angels of Death: Goering's Luftwaffe. I won't even link it, because it's awful. Either way, James S. Corum is a retired US Army Lt. Col., and is an air-power and counter-insurgency historian. And he puts a lot of emphasis on demystifying and de-propagandizing the Wehrmacht by bringing the readers attention to the shear volume of badly researched and poorly written material, authored by non-historians, published post-1945. In his mind, those crap books (like Hoyt's Angels of Death) have done a lot of damage to our understanding of the Second World War. He says in The Luftwaffe book, for example, that you really shouldn't be writing a serious work on the Wehrmacht if you: don't read German, don't have a background as a military historian, and don't have access to primary sources. He talks a lot about how reliance on secondary sources has created a lot of false information. Either way, it's very interesting stuff.

As J5 posts more information, it should become easier to register. I don't even know if they've made the announcement on the Rise of Flight boards yet.

S! All, Jasta 5 is going to host a great campaign called Black September. It will be run on Saturdays in September (the 10th, 17th and 24th) at 1700-2130 GMT on the J5 server. I highly recommend people check it out! JG1 will definitely be participating. And FIF XXV will be delayed until early October to allow everyone to fly in both events! Pretty much. BOS/M's unlock system necessitates that you fly the single player campaign in order to gradually be given access to the aircraft modifications. So, if you want to remove the rear-facing pilot armor from your cockpit in a Bf 109, or use gondola cannons in a Bf 109, etc. you have to "earn" it. Now, 777 has said that they felt this unlock system was far better than the DLC modifications available in ROF. And Jason and the rest have never understood why people in the community were so upset about it. But the big difference is that in ROF, there is one game. I can choose to either buy the DLC or ignore it. And even though I hate buying DLC, it's à la carte. Which is fair. However, 777 doesn't give you that option with BOS/M. You can either have Standard accounts (two purchases of $50 USD), which gives you everything except for four "collector" aircraft. Or you can have Premium accounts (two purchases of $80 USD), which is supposed to give you everything. But in both cases, regardless of whether you shelled out $100 or $160, you still can't access the stupid modifications without playing the single-player campaign. Basically, they're including these modifcations as "features" in both versions of BOS/M, thus inferring that your initial purchase of said game (regardless of version) is the act of you paying for them. And then, forcing you to grind for it like your trying to get a new mount in World of Warcraft. Which is madness. Now, to be fair, they did recently allow owners of Premium accounts to get rid of this unlock system: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/14433-developer-diary-part-87-discussion/ But even with this, it doesn't apply to Standard accounts, unless you buy the extra "collector" aircraft. It also doesn't apply to the paint schemes, which you technically paid for also. You still need to grind for them. Then, in order to actually get rid of the unlock system, you have to do it through the website, which is dumb because this should be an option within the game. And finally, getting rid of the unlock system is irreversible, which is very dumb. To me, that screams lazy coding. If they wanted this unlock thing, it should have been a "feature" that is turned on and off with the use of a boolean (checkbox). What ever happened to paying for a game and getting the full game? Oh yeah:

Hi All, This is an informal poll for all of those who are checking the FIF area for more information on the upcoming FIF XXV event. Assuming that FIF missions continued to be run at 2PM EDT / 6PM UTC, what weekend day would work best for people? Saturday or Sunday? Currently, there are no plans to shift the FIF missions off of Saturdays. But, there has been enough discussion regarding the possibility of Sundays that I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! And post below with any further comments or questions.

Congratulations to the Red Team! The Red Team has emerged victorious within FIF XXIV! They were able to achieve a total of 86 points within 9 sessions. This was 6 more points than was needed. The Blue Team, often outnumbered, sometimes by more than 2 to 1, put up an extremely intense air campaign. Strong on the offensive, and quick on the defensive, their efforts resulted in some of the best air battles we've seen in the modern Flanders campaigns. Please take the time to congratulate the Blue Team on a job well done! Salute sirs! Moving forward, our hope is that we'll be able to even out the teams within the next month. This should be just in time for the next campaign, which is tentatively scheduled to start on Saturday, September 17th. In the meantime, to celebrate the Red Team's achievement, the FIF XXIV campaign ribbon shows both the British roundel and the German cross on a red background. This looks awesome Panzerbar! Thanks so much for posting. Congrats to the Red Team on their victory in the last campaign! The next tour of duty looks really great. I wish more of our squadron could fly, but the timezones make it difficult for II./JG 1. However, we're so glad that I./JG 1 has been able to participate! They've been telling the rest of us very good things! Perhaps our III./JG 1 would be interested too, as they're European-based as well.

Hi All, I recently received a question regarding the Refly Rules (Friendly Territory and No Man's Land), found within the tournament ruleset: http://forum.jg1.org/topic/2216-flanders-in-flames-ruleset/?p=17545&do=findComment&comment=17545 The person who asked was kind enough to allow me to post this. I thought it might help people. . . . Question #1: If I landed my scout aircraft at an active friendly two-seater base, would I lose my plane? If you're in a scout, and you land at a bomber base, the answer is yes. You'd lose it. All of this has to do with aircraft numbers at the bases, and whether or not you pull from those numbers when taking off. Let's say there are two scout aerodromes (AF1 and AF2), and one "bomber" aerodrome (AB1). Both AF1 and AF2 have the same aircraft. And AB1 has two-seaters. If you took off from AF1 at the beginning of the mission, that's your home base. And every time you refly, you take off from AF1. If you've landed at AF1, you refly in the "same" aircraft you landed in (i.e. it doesn't pull from the field's total number, saving your team aircraft). If you've ditched somewhere else, you respawn at AF1 in a "new" aircraft that does take away from your team's total number at that base. If too many people ditch, and not land, your team could run out of aircraft! With AF1 as your home base, you can emergency land at AF2 (the other scout base). When you do this, you're taking off from AF2 in the "same" aircraft you landed in! Thus, you're not pulling from AF2's total number. This is because AF2 has the same aircraft type as AF1, and thus they can refuel and repair you. However, if your aircraft is destroyed when landing at AF2, it's a write off. You'll now have to go back to AF1 (your home plate). And your team loses the aircraft. So, if you emergency land at AB1 (the bomber base) in a scout aircraft from AF1, the aircraft is lost. This is because AB1 doesn't have the same type of aircraft as what you're flying. When you hit refly, the aircraft disappears. You'll now have to reup at AF1, in a "new" scout aircraft that takes away from your field's total number. Of course, you (as a pilot) can always switch between a scout base and a bomber base in order to change mission roles (fighter to bomber, back to fighter). That's completely cool. You just can't switch back and forth between AF1 and AF2. AF1 will always be your home base. Question #2: Would I then have to refly from my home Aerodrome in another aircraft? As in the above example, if you don't land your aircraft at a base that supports that aircraft type, the aircraft is lost. And you must pull from your home base's total number. If enough people do this, you could technically have an aircraft shortage in the later parts of the mission. Question #3: Will my aircraft appear after 5 minutes at the home Aerodrome? If you've landed at a base that supports your aircraft type (and it's not severely damaged), it automatically is credited to that aerodrome. There is no wait time. The 5 minute waiting time is actually for you. After landing or ditching, you must wait 5 minutes before reflying.

I'm extremely sorry to hear this vW. JG1 is more than just a flight squadron. We're a community of friends too. I'll move you to our Reserves. This way, you can actively keep in touch with us. And if you feel up to it, consider jumping in as a tail gunner in ROF once in a while. That way, there are no consequences for getting up and taking a break. Definitely consider it.
