Thanks to everyone who was able to fly ACME: Aces Over the Rhine with us today! And a special thanks to @Kliegmann for building such a fun and enjoyable mission! The results were an Allied victory. RAF pilots (BLUFOR) were able to blind the German radar net, Himmelbett. And while the Luftwaffe (REDFOR ) put up a dogged defense, the RAF was able to exploit the gap and push through to damage two German industrial areas. However, these Allied successes came at a cost as German Flakkorps proved deadly for both low and high-flying RAF aircraft. Everyone at ACME is looking forward to flying with you all again soon!

In older books, you'll see the emblem shown as a pink demon emerging from clouds against a blue background. However, this has been shown to be wrong. In Luftwaffe Gallery #4, by Erich Mombeek, page 27 reads: "It has long been assumed that the devil appeared against a blue sky background on these emblems, although a recently published colour photo indicates that the fires of hell have in fact turned the 'sky' a deep yellow red colour." @Vonrd, check this private link: https://forum.jg1.org/topic/3778-jg-1-oesau-emblems-and-markings/?do=findComment&comment=31579 There is a mock-up of that aircraft there. This is what it says: Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-4 coded '<I' (WNr. 581) of Stab I./JG 1, flown by Lt. Eberhard Burath, Gruppenadjutant, Deelen, April 1941. "This Fw 190 A-4 displays the devil in the clouds emblem of IV./JG 1 that was retained by the unit after it was renamed I./JG 1. The Geschwader emblem, a Maltese cross overlaid with the sign of the hunter, appears beneath the cockpit. The black and white cowl stripes also indicate that this machine belonged to the Stab of I. Gruppe. The IV. Gruppe disc aft of the Balkenkreuz has recently been over-painted, most probably during early April when the unit was designated and Lt. Eberhard Burath was appointed Gruppenadjutant. As one of the few pilots of the former IV./JG 1 to survive the war, Burath willingly assisted several authors with research into his former unit."

Looks great, Vonrd! I don't buy the Shap, Cumbria connection at all. It makes no real sense. I just can't imagine a German ace caring about Shap granite or a town in Cumbria, which is in the Northwest of England (somewhere were he could never reach in his fighter). I could believe that "Old Shap" is a misspelling/mishearing of the song "Old Shep," which was first recorded in 1935. This seems generally possible. But still, how popular was hillbilly music in Nazi Germany? It's implausible. However, I did find a reference to "Old Shap" in a 1920 book called From Chart House to Bush Hut, by C.W. Bryde. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/36340/36340-h/36340-h.htm It's a book about a sailor in the Queensland Bush. In the book there is a stereotypical German character called Franz, who yells out stuff like "Blitzen und picklehaubes!". And at one point, as Franz is yelling, the skipper Old Tom gets up and yells back (in an Austrialian accent): "What! You 'shuck' your 'yob.' Why! a bloomin' charge of dynamite wouldn't shift you, and you know it, and" (with bitter emphasis) "you can't stuff me with that, old 'shap.'" So, yob is a slurring of gob. And bloomin is the ultimate Aussie slang work. And "old shap" in this context is a slurring of old chap. This to me makes the most sense. Not that Heinzeller read From Chart House to Bush Hut. But that "Shap" is a German making fun of the archaic Briticisms like "old chap/old bean." Especially since many German fighter pilots would paint things on their aircraft specifically to make fun of the British.

Wow, this is impressive stuff. As I watch this, I start getting ideas...

Is that the famous MiG-21 Split-S against the Israeli pilot?

So, there is a MiG-15 event this Saturday (3 PM is EDT, so 1900 Zulu). But they have about one or two a month. So, if you miss this one they'll be another. Probably in July sometime. What you're thinking about over the weekend of July 23rd is probably the joint European / North American practice for the MiG-21bis. Again, the time is 2 PM is EDT, so this is 1800 Zulu. I'd be happy to work with you on the MiG-15 on Monday. I can be online around 9 PM EDT. Would that work?
