  1. Ive been all over the forums reading of this issue & have yet to find a solution so decided to poll this group for hidden knowledge. I had been flying IL2 since its 1st release without issue but 2 patches ago it suddenly stopped working. When I fire it up I get the black screen where it displays "Loading IL2" at the top then I get a CTD. Ive tried all the solutions found on the forums (delete user folder, do steam repair, turn off all overlays & complete reinstall) & so far nothing works. I have noticed there are a percentage of players that have the exact same issue also without resolution. The only thing I have not tried is to run it stand alone (not through Steam). Before I delete it off Steam & buy the stand alone version in the desperate hope it will suddenly work does anyone have any ideas?

Ive got a cpl buddies that have it & wont fly without it. I understand there is a learning curve to using it.

Sorta. They mailed to me when I was recovering from surgery. Its still sitting in its box on my desk. I keep meaning to set it up. Wait time to get it was around 7mo.
  5. It still is... Any new module announced that isnt the latest & greatest aircraft gets a fair amount of derision. IMO these ultra modern aircraft probably arent the best investment financially speaking for developers. The super complex systems take literally YEARS to develop. Cold War aircraft would be so much quicker for them to crank out. More basic / simple systems means development time is greatly reduced so they can move on to the next project much more quickly instead of them lingering in prerelease state for YEARS. WW1 aircraft would be even better. A few simple gauges, detailed visual & flight model & Bobs your Uncle, you got a release ready aircraft. A single developer could crank out the entire WW1 planeset in a few months. Even if they charged a premium for all aircraft I bet there would be no shortage of people jumping on it.
  6. Ironically I never considered the possibility of a DCS WW1 add on. Now confronted with the idea I am truly intrigued with it & hope some developer takes a whole hearted swing at creating a WW1 map (though the Normandy map would do in a pinch) as well as all the aircraft. Having said that I do not think it would likely do well. While I firmly believe DCS is a superior platform its financial model (where you buy each item individually) would likely not be embraced by the WW1 community unless each plane were on the same price scale as say Rise of Flight.
  7. It wouldnt surprise me if there is something to that. I also run all Intel & have had no problems.
  8. Off to be a martyr of the revolution...
  9. Wow that sucks. Just spitballing here but are you sure the posts refer to the G2? The G1 had a well known problem with its cabling, specifically where it connected to the headset being a weak point. I have not heard of any problems with the G2. If you havent already pulled the trigger to send it back I would head over to the VR4DCS discord. A buddy of mine that goes by Thud runs it & hes a guru of all things VR. https://discord.gg/yH9Txvqq
  10. Just started using a new one. Yet another jet I would love to have in DCS. Who am I kidding, I pretty much want ALL the Cold War era aircraft in DCS
  11. I have no problem plugging in while the tanker is turning... TO THE LEFT... but for some reason this tanker was making a right hand turn. It really messed with my head. I had a devil of a time plugging in. SU33 is pretty twitchy in its own right not making it any easier.
  12. I am a Nvidia guy mainly because I have always been one & have never had a problem with it. Running an RTX 2080 TI right now but will be upgrading to a 3080 in the near future. You asked about BoX specifically. In the interest of transparency after the last IL2 upgrade I can no longer get BoX to load. It crashes on boot but I am reasonably confident that has nothing to do with my GPU.
  13. If you want some help or coaching I would be happy to assist. I am pretty fair at tanking in all the DCS jets. IMO the F-18 is the easiest & the F-14 the hardest. IMO what hurts ppl the most when learning to hit the basket is mindset. Everyone can figure out how to trim for level flight & some jets have quirks (Harrier set flaps to cruise, Tomcat set wingsweep to manual etc) but the pressure when you get behind the basket can be immense, especially when in a group & you know people are watching. In the end its mostly a mind game. Whether you think you can or think you cant you will be right. Being relaxed & confident is the best recipe for success. The setup for this shot was actually pretty fun. I had not fired HARMs in some time & since JTF will be using them I wanted to get a sense of what it would look like from our perspective & see how far away they would most likely be shooting from. I went up on my personal practice mission to fire several at SAM sites on the coast of Iran. I wasnt really paying attention & accidently crossed into Iranian airspace off the coast which fired a trigger activating SA10 sites & a MiG-29 cap. I noticed the SA10s & went defensive managing to get away but as I approached the coast again I did not notice the MiG29s on my RWR. It had been beeping about all the SAM sites so what was 1 more warning right? I was instead focused on shooting HARMs until my RWR started screaming at me when a R27 was launched. The 29s were close & I went defensive again. AIM-9Xs are Satans own hands (I expect we will be saying that)! I killed both 29 while looking straight up using the HMCS & getting a lock. Thats just insane. Anyway excitement over I just started climbing away from the coast when I get the Bingo fuel warning. Closest tanker was 80mi away. I probably could have made it back to the boat direct but where is the fun in that? So I headed for the tanker. As I saddled up & made my precontact call I had 500lbs of fuel remaining. Now I am actually a little nervous because I am against the clock for getting some fuel. The nervousness showed & took me 5-6 attempt to plug in. I took on 3000lbs then headed for the boat. Was a fun flight!

  15. I actually own that but its sitting in my "to be read" stack. I went & purchased "Devotion" also by Adam Makos when I was about half way through A Higher Call. I am taken by his writing style & how he gets into the peoples past. So far its a very good book about one of the Navys 1st black aviators. The book goes into his Korean War service flying Corsairs but I havnt gotten that far yet.
  16. I imagine most of y'all are like me in that you have a very cool/inspiring/beautiful wallpaper on your PC. I find one I like allot & it stays there until I find something I like better. Always being in the market for my next best wallpaper, Show me your wallpaper! My own is a lovely scene of a pair of F-14s.
  17. Working on a mission & was watching the AI. It got my blood up, MAN do I want a flyable, full fidelity F-104 in DCS!!
  18. I installed Desert Wings shortly after it was released then life happened & I forgot about it. I just rediscovered it last night & made a few flights. I am biased in that the Desert War is one of my primary interests but I gotta say its very well done & I really enjoyed it. Anyone else playing it?
  19. I am surprised there isnt already a thread for this. I just finished "A Higher Call" by Adam Makos & highly recommend it! https://adammakos.com/a-higher-call-book.html I have read dozens of books from all eras of aviation but this one is starkly different. Most of those books focus on the actual battles which honestly is what I was looking for. This book while it does talk about some of the battles of Franz Stigler what grabbed me most was the anecdotal information about life in Germany during the war. Its a quick read about a good man, trying to do the right thing in his nations darkest hour.
  20. Not HOI but I do a cpl of the Scourge of War series. Mostly Gettysburg & Waterloo. Also play "World War 1 Centennial Edition" which is very like HOI IIRC.
  21. This is going down as one of my more memorable recoveries. Got in a tussle with a cpl 29's. Wasnt a pretty fight but I flew away from it & they didnt. Anyway, radios out, avionics out & Jester dead. I found the carrier with the standby compass, dead reckoning & more than a little luck only to discover my hydraulics are also out & wing sweep is jammed. Gear nor hook will come down without the hydraulics. I was planning on punching out but thought I might try a high speed landing if I can get my gear & hook down. Sure enough a blast from the O2 bottle popped them free. Jettisoned everything I had left to get as light as possible. Snagged the 2 wire with a touchdown speed around 170kts. Brakes were apparently locked too. I came to a stop nose up. A bit long in the groove & my profile wasnt exactly pretty but I got her home in mostly one piece.
  22. Was playing with the Harrier last night. This is one angry SA8 site!
  23. No it helps a great deal. I know there are a tremendous number of nits to how they painted their planes. I will make the changes.
  24. I am no Luftwaffe markings expert but near as I can tell the markings are correct for a Kurst of II/JG-1. What did I miss? Comment, criticisms?
