Lipfert, not sure if you're ready to revisit this, currently. Recently, I made a new TARGET profile for BoX. I had issues with modifier key-bindings and found the solution to be to add a delay. From the manual:

There is a setting on the server side that allows for Custom skins, but I'm not sure what that specific setting is. Edit: Found this thread on IL-2 forums: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/36967-custom-skins/ Maybe we can see them without downloading them at a cost of bandwidth?

They really need to consolidate their downloads into a .zip or two.

Couple names and squads I remember, too. Definitely miss the Spits vs. 109s servers. However, those planes feel like they were on rails when compared to today's sims.
