[FIX] CH Products Control Manager after Windows 10 Creator Update
-Hawkeye- replied to Somnus's topic in Technical Support
First, I'm wondering if you guys use "CMStart" in your startup folder. Next, do you minimize Teamspeak before you enter the game? TS seems to commandeer certain keyboard keys when it's open. Just wondering what the issues are, as for me, I don't experience any issues related to RoF, and never have; but it's the only sim or game I play right now. S! -
Yes. Not to the eye, but in the game itself. Much, or even most, of the processing is done directly by the GPU instead of the CPU now (although RoF is known to be CPU intensive). I can't explain why, but if I set Nvidia CP to run unlimited frame rates, although I see some tearing, the planes actually seem to perform better. They don't seem to fall out of sustained hard turns as easily. The planes seem to zoom better. They even seem to do more damage (my theory is that fewer of the bullets are "lost"). But if you were to measure the straight up performance parameters like top speed, climb, etc., you wouldn't see any difference. I guess you have to ask yourself this: why the big push for higher refresh rates in gaming monitors over other monitors, gained at a high price, if only to have an improvement in a spec that the eye can't detect anyway?

I can tell you anything you want to know with respect to how my monitor works with RoF. Here are some of the main things to consider: I see no problem at all with respect to backlight glow. There is significant glow that is seen when the screen is black. This is no issue with RoF since almost all the action takes place in bright scenarios, and even night missions have enough other light that it's not noticable or distracting. That being said, if you're a big user of space sims in which the screen is mostly black almost all of the time, you might want to consider this aspect very carefully. Resolution. I would definitely not consider a large, 4k monitor for gaming because of the extra stress they put on your GPU. Mine is what they call a 2k monitor and I must say honestly, I can't see any real difference in detail compared to my old 1080p tv. On the other hand, the higher resolution makes everything smaller, so although you can see a bigger chunk of the world on the screen, it actually makes seeing tiny objects more difficult for somebody like me, who's eyes aren't that great anymore. Judicious use of zoom can and must make up for that. Aspect ratio. The screen I have is 34 inches, but I was mistaken in thinking it would look equal or bigger than my old 32 inch TV. The increase is all in width, and is actually smaller in vertical height. Honestly I think that RoF and other games is optimized for 16:9 aspect ratio. I forget what odd ball aspect ratio I have, and RoF certainly runs on it; but I now have a fish eye effect that I never had on my old 16:9 screen. That is, there is some stretching that goes on at the edges. This becomes noticable when you turn your head and see an object with the edge of your view, and it looks a certain size. Then as you turn your head more so that the object is toward the center of your view, the object becomes bigger. This can bite you when an enemy is chasing you and you think he's far enough away, but as you change your view angle you realize he's closer than you thought. You get used to this after a while and naturally compensate, but it's always there. High refresh frequency. You have to look at resolution and frequency as total throughput; together they comprise the load on your GPU. I have a GTX 1080 and it has no problem running the high resolution at the 100 hz max of my monitor. This does more for you than extra resolution with respect to gaming, because it reduces the adverse effects of latency, ghosting, lag, etc. This is the main reason I bought a gaming monitor, and I believe it's a significant advantage. If you're suffering any of these effects on your old screen, you probably don't notice them because you've grown used to them. GPU to monitor cable. In order to use G-Sync, and especially because of the high throughput required by the fast refresh rates and high resolution, you must use a Display Port (DP) cable, but also the length of that cable can't be very long due to the extra signal loss that causes. Basically only the cable that comes with the monitor is guaranteed to work, so you must plan on having your computer within reach of that cable to the monitor. G-Sync. This is probably the best aspect of a screen like mine and the best reason to buy one. It gives you the benefits of V-sync without any of the drawbacks. When you have G-Sync enable you'll have additional options available in Nvidia Control Panel that you don't have now. They can be confusing but I can explain what they do to anybody who wants to know. S!

FiF 2017 Fall, Phase B2 from my point of view. The whole 2 hours, didn't bother to edit, even forgot to stop recording during my single pit stop. The good news is that due to a software update, my microphone audio level was too low and you can't hear anything I'm saying So much the better, you can hear everybody else. Enjoy! S!

Interesting Video on the Altitude Throttle
-Hawkeye- replied to Wilhelm_Reinhard's topic in Public Discussion
Thanks Wilhelm, I had a handle on the basic concept of how that engine worked, but never really heard the details of how the two throttles interacted. Also it's good to hear the Mercedes D.IIIau engine mentioned. IMHO the self-damage aspect of those two engines has been under-modeled; at one time they were far more vulnerable to improper operation in RoF. However, there was a huge outcry from the community as to their fragility, and the response was to make them much more resistant to over throttling. I've even heard pilots say that they thought the Halb CL.II 200-HP "just sounds that way" normally when the throttle is too far forward at low altitudes, and had no idea it was because the engine was knocking and theoretically damaging itself. It's become standard procedure for those Halb pilots to run with the engine knocking all the time, and never incur any noticeable damage effects to the engine in the game. I will admit that in the early days of RoF when all the engines were far more vulnerable to self damage, there were times that the engine would "oil" for reasons impossible to fathom, and the game did need improvement, but not maybe to the extent that things are now. Even the S.E.5a was considered to have a "glass" engine, although in my opinion it could easily be operated without killing it if proper attention was paid to the RPM limit. There are still planes in RoF that need "fixing" to make them reasonably tolerant, and one of these is the Fokker D.VIII. Simply flying this plane at high altitude for a short time (above 4 Km or so) will destroy the engine even in level flight, due to the effects of cold temperature on the rotary engine. To see this effect it is only necessary to enable full gauges, and then watch the redline of the tachometer creep slowly down until it actually goes below the current RPM and the engine oils itself. This is something that should not happen, and it's indicative of the types of DM problems that existed for many engines when RoF was newer. There are may pilots in RoF that are very acclimated to flying planes in which it is almost impossible to cause the engine to over-rev, a lot of which is caused by it's prop pitch and the resistance of a large rotary engine to changing speeds quickly due to the flywheel effect. They then complain loudly when they get into different planes which don't act the same, and accidentally destroy the engine. I don't know how much of this will change in the future with FC, but over all in RoF things ended up being far more realistic than in other, previous sims. Hopefully, they'll provide a Mercedes D.IIIau version of the the Fokker D.VII, the lack of which in RoF is something that causes a lot of degradation of that plane's reputation in that sim. Right now, we are stuck with an "either-or" situation for the D.VII, and it's seen either as a crappy plane which is not worth flying, or an uber plane that needs to be severely limited because of it's huge perceived advantages, and pilots of which are not respected because they're seen as too easy to win in. Neither perception is accurate, but it illustrates how people think. BTW, at one point GregHF states that the Mercedes D.IIIau is also used in the Albatros D.Va. I do not think that was ever the case in RL; in RoF it is not the case, otherwise it would operate exactly the way the Halb CL.II 200-HP does. In RoF the Alb D.Va has the normally aspirated Mercedes D.IIIa, which they show as having 180 HP at sea level, but which loses power in a conventional manner at higher altitudes. There are some pilots in RoF that think, or at one time thought, that the Alb D.Va has a more powerful engine than the Alb D.III, which was never the case. In the early days of RoF, the Alb D.III OAW was a slightly better plane than the D.Va, which was an opinion that many German WWI pilots actually held. Since RoF "fixed" the top speeds of many planes in it's final update, it is no longer the case. S! -
Starting a "fortnightly" Twitch stream! :)
-Hawkeye- replied to J5_Hotlead's topic in JG1 Videos & Screen Caps
You can see the archived stream here: https://go.twitch.tv/videos/200788530 Seems like you had a bad day on that one! I hate it when that happens! -
You don't think all that capability is going to limit what can be done with any normal MMP server? We'll see. Thanks all for the great news and info!! They had me at "hello"
-
Me too!! Have gotten air sick on C-141 rides with no windows and maneuvering to drop paratroops, and also on helicopter rides on very turbulent days, and have been on the verge on ocean swells (thank God for alcohol) Also on one VR experience, Aladdin's Magic Carpet Ride at Downtown Disney in Orlando. Thanks for the synopsis, I would want it to be a gaming advantage over TIR; I guess I wouldn't sacrifice that aspect for immersion alone, although that's always nice to have. S!
-
Does this VR stuff ever make you guys nauseous? Also, do you consider it an advantage over TIR?
-
I see I got a LOT of help on those kills! Great shooting! Thanks to both Dudley and Hotlead for awesome teamwork!

Sort of got this same thing in RoF recently on MMP server, not SP. Wanted to blame it on the server (Wargrounds), but truthfully never got that before on any server. Not really a slide show, but close. Windows updates as per usual...no driver updates. Last update, game controllers all changed ID's again, so had to revise all game controllers maps to make them correct again. GeForce Experience no longer works, says I need an updated Nvidia driver to work now....that never happened before. I think possibly Windows did something major lately.

Thank-you for the information, hang in there! S!

Oct. 14 - 15 Vintage Mission Weekend
-Hawkeye- replied to cubancoverunner's topic in Public Discussion
This is the kind of thing that I'd love to get into but there always seems to be something that takes precedence. This weekend I ended up at a friend's lake house and we partied pretty hardy and had a great time through the whole weekend. I know Cuban's opportunities to work around other RoF events are limited. Still, I hope he doesn't give up! Winter is coming and I know if the thing had gone through today (Monday) I'd be there for sure! Hang in there, Cuban, your efforts are very much appreciated, even as an opportunity, even if not taken advantage of! S! -
Well that must have taken some research....where'd you find it? Book you have? Whatever the source, great work!
-
That's awesome news!
-
Yeah, Etzel! So glad to hear you're interested in flying in FiF! I think you'll find the missions very interesting. Hope you end up on the Red Team, but if not, fun is in your future, regardless! S!!

"One Life to Live" Twitch stream
-Hawkeye- replied to J5_Hotlead's topic in JG1 Videos & Screen Caps
I think he has a 27, like you. It's all in the zoom and acft recognition... unless your monitor settings are producing or causing a lack of sharpness or contrast.
