I have Iron Butterfly's first three albums - Heavy, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, and Ball.  They're all really good.  For anyone interested, I highly recommend checking out their deeper cuts.

They're really good!  They remind me of Jethro Tull, mixed with Nightwish and In Extremo.

That's pretty great, Pfeil.  I'll have to check out dArtagnan.  It's too bad that proper metal festivals don't really happen in the USA. 

 

I did see Jethro Tull a few years back and I gotta say, Ian Anderson still has it.  That guy will be 90 and somehow still playing flute while hopping on one leg like a madman.
 

Here's a band from the 70s Southern USA that I really wish made more albums.

Baltimore Deathfest (I only recognized 1 band name - Deicide - out of the entire list). Not my genre but it has metal in the name.

I can see where it can get derivative and annoying (but that goes for ALL music... and on further reflection... ALL artistic / human endeavors for that matter)... still, I am impressed.
