In Gimp, I build up a skin layer by layer roughly weathering on top basic paint under. The personal markings and emblems somewhere in between. After the flattening where all the layers are dropped onto each other as if one picture I add the alpha channel: Matt on canvas, shiny on metal parts. Merging all the layers is another method but that makes the dds file even larger (bytes wise) Are there other methods?

@EmerlistDavjack I think you forgot to add the alpha-channel after flattening the layers. Now they are matt all over even at the metal parts of the A/C. Otherwise good skins, easy to recognise.

Hello McDonnell, welcome! I hope you get settled in JG1, take your time. FYI, we have a European pilots WhatsApp group which we use to make arrangements for flying on WWI and/or WWII servers. If you send me a PM with your phone number I’ll add you to the group.

@Vonrd, may I help you or if you want take over the responsibility for the JG1 Skins? This is my plan: I’ll make several zip files with the skins. First two zips files will have all the folders of official IL2 skins, one for WWI and one for WWII. Second comes a file with all the WWI folders containing the JG1 basic versions and the personal skins of JG1 pilots. The last one for now is a file with the attributed FiF skins from non-JG1 units/pilots. That way everybody can delete the present skin folder and by doing so getting rid of all the outdated stuff and after that add only what you want/need. Some of us only fly WWI, others only WWII and some fly both period A/C. Next I’ll start working on basic skin versions for the WWII A/C. When those are finished I’ll put them in a separate zip file to be added to the skin pac. NB All skins will be in 2K only, the 4K ones I’ll reduce in size.

Thank you @Troz, creating a convincing spoke wheel was not easy, in the end I had to draw a new one. Copying an original left to much noise around the spokes because I needed the alpha layer to make the background shine through.

Not yet, we’re in final stadium for FC. You could start with just 5./JG1, but stick to the Paint Policy from the Dicta and use the Alpha layer correct. Best would be to search for actual skin patterns for the specific A/C and period and add to that the mandatory and personal markings. While creating the skin of say a mid ‘41 bf109F2, don’t forget to ask the other members of 5./JG1 and the especially the command about their wishes on markings and emblems. Also vary a bit with patterns, not all A/C in a Staffel were of the same manufacturing date. Some came from other units and were partially over painted. To cover the early war ‘39-‘40 with just the E7 you could use an earlier E# skin. With other A/C which were longer in use with JG1 you could create an early and late variant as well. Post the try outs in a PM to me and @Klaiber to prevent wandering of in the wrong direction, would be a waist of precious time.

@Barton, I don’t know if this is a just good memory to this specific A/C or if it is your intention to put your score on the skin. In case of the last, from our Paint Policy: 3. Personal victory markings, known as Abschussbalken (kill bars) did not exist within the Luftstreitkräfte (German Air Arm) of the First World War. As a result, their use is prohibited within JG Nr. I.

@ScorchedBeans, I can make you a new skin based on this one. Right now I’ve some FC skins to finish first, but after that I’ll start working on yours (the Bf109F4) first. Okay? @Vonrd is that also okay with you? The skin will be of a camo pattern in use by the Western Front units (preferably JG1) and according to the type of A/C. So no FW190 pattern on a Bf109 nor a K4 on a E7. On top of the actual patterns used will be laid the Geschwader/Gruppe/Staffel markings and added to that the personal emblem and/or motto. That is the paint policy as described in the Dicta. Luckily their are enough different patterns to choose from. I’ll PM you some examples of a F4 this week so you can have an idea where we are going.

Hello Jaus, you’re very welcome, nice that you joined JG1. I’m happy to fly with you again any time soon.

No. I'm save, J5 choose for Schlachtstaffel 27b, which I think is more correct than a Schusta. But wasn't Schlasta 27, the old JG1 bomber wing? Besides that maybe not the best choice for J5, Schlasta 27 had black and with striped tails like J6 has.

That's what I wrote, didn't I? Besides it's an inspiration and not a copy, otherwise I wouldn't have used it on the 1-seaters.

Because of my transfer to J4 I had to change my skins. Below are the skins for both the Entente as the Axis. I hope that you like them and that they are added to the JG1 Skin Package. @Vonrd, I deleted the links to the .dds files in the post on page 1 and made a reference to this post. The .dds files are already in their respective folders. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Z0tg1yJUhrbI9TwNNQa4lKsKe-LKF_vD The Entente: Same skin for the 2 and the 3

I knew that Baader was part of the RAF, but I thought that he and the RAF were from Germany.

No problem, go ahead. Be aware of the fault on the starboard side right after the cockpit of the Alb.

Absolute fine, great team, great guys. I don't know which of them is their "skinner". It might be better to ask them for a skin, I don't want to fish in their pond. Just because I saw that you are in CET/CEST thought you might want to join the other European members in flight in FC or BoX. We have a small WhatsApp group, which we use for arranging Rendez-Vous. Just in case you want to join us in that, you can send me a PM with your phone number and I'll add you to the group.
-
To whom is your question? This is a nasty skin to get right: for example the rear part of the Alb fuselage consists of 6 unconnected parts, to get the triangles perfect cost some time. I have other skins to do first this week (promises to keep). Hope you're not in a hurry. Become a member of JG1 and I'll make you these skins. We have more Europeans in the org, all the more reason to join us.

Yes, some one did, but on his way back to finish it off, he was trailed by the 3x3 deckers, kinda lost my appetite.
