... in 1932, Amelia Earhart took off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, beginning the world's first solo transatlantic flight by a woman; she landed in Northern Ireland thirteen and a half hours later. This archival image from our provincial museum, The Rooms, shows her in front of the Cochrane Hotel in St John's (just a few blocks from my house -- though, to be fair, anywhere in downtown St John's fits that description!) with Bernt Balchen (left), a navigator and engineer hired by Earhart as a technical advisor, and Lewis L'Esperance, a representative of the Shell Oil Company.

A friend of mine sent me the link to the article about the mid-air between the Cirrus and the Sa-226 which I bet you have all seen by now. He said that this was previously an old Berry Aviation bird and previous to that was an old Martinaire bird. I flew every 226/227 that we had back then... close to 20 of them and had 4,000+ hours in the type. I loved the airplane because it always brought me home including deadstick into Dallas Love field. The funny thing that first struck me when I saw the picture was he got him right in the cargo door which was something of an engineering feat for the day to have a door that large on a plane that small. The infamous "click-clack" lat…

Colors are buyer's choice, many options for the metal and brown or black for the chair. Here's the reddit article that caught my eye: The maker is only on Facebook, but for those with the account, here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/SIMpleSIMpit/ That MiG-29 ($599) stick is amazing, but I'm doing alright with my current TM set. I might order the chair ($299) without the throttle stand and use my current set-up, probably adjusted with an extension on the TM sticks, and quite possibly mount one of the collectives that are out there!

Kameraden, Anybody here have a Flieger Watch? I'm trying to decide between Laco & Stowa pattern B. Really digging the retro simple style. S!

Kameraden, As mentioned last night online, John Boyko has written "The Devil's Trick: How Canada Fought the Vietnam War". My big brother Doug Carey 1st Div. 27th Bat. Marine Corp has a chapter about his involvement. One amazing thing that happened was Doug's friend (Dane Brown) found a photo that was lost in time since I think 1968, we've not seen this one before. Notice the high tech gear being used by the tunnel rat (Doug). S!

I am supposed to use PrtScn to take screenshots in DCS. I went to the GENERAL tab of the key controls and confirmed that... and yes it is greyed out as everyone describes. PrtScr works to take screen shots in everything else on the computer... but doesn't like DCS for some reason. Any one have an idea what I need to change? Thanks in advance.

https://www.historynet.com/the-truth-about-rotaries.htm It's a quick read. What do you think about this article? I think it's funny that a site called "Historynet" doesn't date some (none that I've read) articles.

As title explains, ED have decided to encrypt and hide almost all the .LUA files, so modding is essentially dead. Why you ask? Because of "cheating"... I'm not sure what this "popular demand" is all about, smells like BS to me to be quite frank. In the fifteen plus years playing DCS/LOMAC I've never come across anyone cheating online, nor have I spoken to anyone who's ever complained about it. With things as they are now, the A-4 Skyhawk community mod would be impossible, and it's hard to know how this will effect it going forward. Really idiotic and tone deaf move from ED here, incredibly disappointed. They nerf missiles to ahistorical ranges to encourage more…

I finally threw caution to the wind and splashed out on a pair of the TM Cougar MFD's, tragically however I only had one spare USB slot on my hub so I've ordered a larger one. Too many peripherals for simming!!! As a result only one is powered up but it looks really awesome. Will have to print off some inserts that better reflect the F-16C in DCS, think I'll print off one for the FCR page and one for the HSD which looks quite a bit different. I fear this is but the beginning of me building my own sim pit as I've been looking at UFC panels too, there's a nice one for the A-10C which would serve well and it's in a nice form factor too. Some of them have absolutel…

Hi folks! With the Hind just around the corner, I've been once again looking at the Syria map and wondering if I should get it. My concern is that I've noted on the ED forums there are many people, with high spec machines, stating they're getting poor performance and lots of stuttering (even with a RTX 2080 & 32Gb RAM). I'm running a similar system setup, with an i7 9700K. Developer feedback is non-existent on the ED forums, seemingly they're a non-english speaking team so ED handles communications "when they can". This has lead to more than a few frustrated players dealing with insane RAM usage on just an empty instant action mission, with the map filling u…

Title says it all, it's a hefty patch chaps so better download somewhat ahead of time if you plan on flying. Patch notes: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/news/changelog/openbeta/2.7.0.4625/ On a side note, the DCS 2.7 launch/Spring sale is now live for the standalone version of the sim, up to 50% off most modules! Tempted by the Viper tbh.

Some of you know that I recently got a Reverb G-2. I'm really pleased with it. I rocks in BOx... I'm getting about 90 FPS with settings almost maxed out. I also installed the VRNeckSafer which is ridiculously easy and eliminates the issues that I had with checking six in VR. I think Heinrich uses it also. Here's the link and I highly recommend it: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/67985-simple-tool-to-check-your-six/ So, my issue is with DCS. I'm only getting about 35 to 40 FPS and it's not as smooth as BOx with those frame rates. Before I go down the rabbit hole in trying to improve it, I thought I'd see what y'all's settings are. I've attached my system spe…

There's a 109 for sale in Germany. Seems fairly reasonably priced, maybe we should start a GoFundMe campaign? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Messerschmitt-BF-109-G6-Project/293835781996?mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&siteid=0&campid=5337797875&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1

Hey gang! My basement flood is still an ongoing issue (Insurance payment dispensed, waiting on the selected contractor to come in and actually repair the damage now - it's been 3-5 weeks since we selected him . . . .) In preparation for my first full racing season since "Retiring" after my 2016 pro campaign, I've acquired my first ever new truck as a lease that's well within my financial constraints and suits my needs. Grabbed it as an end of February special and did the paperwork for it on the last day of the month while the truck hadn't arrived at the dealership yet. It's a 2021 Toyota Tacoma SR5 Trim level, 1 up from base model with cloth seats and a crew cab …

Very interesting vid on a controlled detonation of a 1000 kg WW2 bomb in Exeter (GB): Drone footage shows WW2-era bomb being detonated in Exeter, England - YouTube ...allthough I definitely don't would like to be in any of the buildings around seen in the video, I find it nevertheless interesting that based pure on optical impression none of the buildings that stand even in the 1st row next to the explosion show any signifikant damage. So for me this confirms the arguments out of several other threads on that topic, that a 1000 kg bomb does not have a very big impact as it would sound based on the weight, so that 2x500 or 4x250kg instead are much more usef…

Curious if any of you gents have any aviation artwork hanging on the walls? I confess I'm a sucker for stuff like this, if I bought every piece I went "ooohhhh" and "aaaaahhhh" at I'd probably need a second mortgage and a small section of the national gallery gallery to hang them in 🤣. I've got one relatively "cheap" print from the folks at Aces High in Buckinghamshire (next to RAF Halton where I used to live), they had a signing event and I managed to get lots of former RAF chaps from WWII service (BoB and onwards) to sign the print for me so it's a bit special. I imagine most, if not all of them have since passed on. I remember being particularly gutted that…
